UPS drivers are making deliveries in U-Haul trucks — and people are panicking and calling the police

A United Parcel Service (UPS) delivery person prepares to deliver packages in the Manhattan borough of New York

UPS is renting out hundreds of U-Haul trucks across the county as it faces mounting pressure to deliver packages on time ahead of Christmas.

The trucks are a "cost-effective way to expand our delivery fleet," UPS spokesman Brian Hughes told Business Insider.

He said it's common for UPS to rent additional trucks during the holidays.

a Enterprise rental van.

Didn't need to call the cops though. We have to 'self-protect' out here as the quickest response time we get from the police is about 15 minutes...

But we don't need to "self-protect", because IT'S FREAKING UPS.

saves tons of money rather than buying new trucks for the Christmas rush. I
wonder how dogs react to them, they seem to have a built in dislike for those brown trucks.

they'd be able to at least print a bunch of magnetic UPS Delivery stickers for the side of the trucks. Not foolproof, but it might take the edge off.

One could argue that it sets a precedence for abuse, but coming up in unmarked uhauls isn't better.

who show up in battered cars at 8 am and ring my apartment to get into our building to deliver packages that are definitely not for me (because I do not have Amazon Prime). I finally had to call Amazon customer service and tell them they had to knock this off.

And this is not a holiday season thing--it's year round.

have for years, get multiple deliveries from them on a routine basis and mine are always delivered by UPS or in the case of small non-rush packages UPS to local USPS. I must have spent tens of thousands of dollars with them in homes in 3 states and I've never seen or heard of an Amazon Prime driver. Apparently Amazon Flex started in Seattle two months ago, but they use contractors not employees. I'd be intrigued to know more about this year round exposure....

Just regular guys, no uniforms, driving their own cars. This is in a very large urban area, with mostly high- and mid-rise apartments.

If the person for whom there is a delivery doesn't answer, they just think they can ring anyone's buzzer so that they can get into the building and leave the package. However, we are never supposed to ring in people we don't know. So I tell them, "Sorry, it's not for me, I can't let you in." (And I'm not running down six flights in my bathrobe to check them out.)

I know the UPS and FedEx people. I don't know these contractors from Adam.

Don't think it is out of the realm of possibilities that somebody will decide a UPS driver is a thief and will shoot one claiming self defense.

How hard can it be? A magnetic sign on each door would do it.

Thieves do use UHaul trucks in house burglaries sometimes.
