Blistering cold follows on heels of wintry storm in West

Source: AP

By BRADY McCOMBS

Parts of Arizona more accustomed to sunshine and clear skies will see freezing temperatures this week that come with warnings not to leave pets or sensitive plants outside.

The chilly predictions follow wintry storms that moved across the West this week and dumped several inches of snow in northern Arizona, while leaving behind more than a foot in Wyoming and Montana.

The Salt Lake City area had its first major winter storm Monday with highway troopers reporting hundreds of accidents and slide-offs as nearly one foot of snow blanketed northern Utah.

Rain soaked parts of California as rigorous weather brought cold temperatures, powerful winds and pounding surf.

FULL story at link.

David Rutter, a full-time resident of Payson, shovels his driveway after snow fell, covering the area with a few inches in Payson, Ariz., Monday, Dec. 14, 2015. A storm that dumped snow on northern Arizona left traffic crawling along powder-packed highways and canceled schools Monday, with blistering cold weather expected to follow in its wake. We don't even bother getting the shovel out for the amount of snow that's on the ground in that picture.

That snow will be gone by noon.

Even sooner if the drive was blacktop.

I call bullshit on this sensationalistic piece.

Overnight temperatures are above normal. Just because the temps feel chilly does not mean they're below seasonal or daily averages, because according to Intelicast, here's the temps for where we live compared to the average today through the rest of the week.

today 4 degrees above normal
tomorrow 4 degrees below normal
the following day 8 degrees above normal
the following day 8 degrees above normal
the following day 13 degrees above normal
the following day 9 degrees above normal
the following day 14 degrees above normal
the following day 13 degrees above normal

We as humans may have a stunted memory and you can deny that it feels warmer than it should, but you cannot fool scientific record keeping.

The drought isn't over and the storms thus far out west have been fairly weak. Here anyways.

"The collapse is finally over!!11!!" Then the article says "Oil prices went up 2% today...." That's 73 cents a barrel.

It's below normal any way you slice it (high temperature or overnight low) in my town, though the overnight low is expected to be four degrees above the all time record low.

across the region, all year round. I've checked. It's not just a passing fad or just an oversimplification of the matter. I've seen lower elevations have colder temps than ours, but mostly in the winter, so maybe temperature inversions are keeping us at higher elevations much much warmer than what we would otherwise be. It's been consistent for years.

I'll give you some examples and you can go from there. Take a look at Denver, CO's, Lake Tahoe, CA's, & Boise, ID's current weather and forecast overnight lows, comparing them to historic averages, you'll see the same thing as I posted previously, all significantly and consistently above normal with few exceptions. I'd say that qualifies for a region.

So your point, though correct, is just not well founded in this situation.
