Officials have closed all Los Angeles Unified School District campuses Tuesday morning after receiving a "credible threat" of violence involving backpacks and packages left at campuses.
Authorities said they plan a search operation of all of the LAUSD's more than 900 schools. The nation's second-largest school district has more than 700,000 students.
I think its important to take this precaution based on what has happened recently and what has happened in the past, LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines said.
The move comes less than two weeks after two shooters killed 14 people in San Bernardino in what was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.

A law enforcement official says the threat that closed all schools in the vast Los Angeles Unified School District was emailed to a school board member and appeared to come from overseas.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation. The official says the threat was sent late Monday.
Superintendent Ramon Cortines says the threat was made against students at many of the district's schools. Officials wouldn't elaborate.
Cortines says the San Bernardino shooting that left 14 people dead on Dec. 2 influenced the decision to shut down the district's more than 900 schools and 187 public charter schools.

(21,054 posts)The hatred and craziness out there is all over the place. I am hoping this is totally phony and no one gets hurt. Yes, a waste of time and money if a false phone threat...but better than people getting blown to hell and back.

(1,357 posts)Hoax bomb threats as pranks happen frequently. Not a threat against nearly 1000 schools. This is new.

(68,918 posts)I will continue to be more concerned with the very real daily threat of crazy neighbors with guns. I will continue to live unafraid. I would also like my local news to cover an actual tragedy here right now. We have a school bus that was hit by a semi, and that is an all too common occurence here.

I'm sure there are plenty of home school organizations huddled under their beds in fear that can help out.

(3,911 posts)I don't understand why they would be huddled under their beds. They're perfectly safe.

(1,232 posts)a threat being carried out in real life. Seems to only happen in the movies.
It makes no sense for a terrorist to warn his victims of an impending attack as it defies the intent, altogether, doesn't it?
However, if they have actual intelligence and information on a potential threat, that's different, but the wording of the warning doesn't make it sound like that.
But this sounds like a 'phoner'....
It really sucks, to cause such chaos at a time when fears are so high, or at any time for that matter. What in heck is wrong with people anyway?

(6,241 posts)to warn the targets ahead of time. Look at the furor that's erupted because of it. "This has never happened before" and stuff like that. Gets people talking.
And then when nothing is found and nothing happens, you get the whole 'boy that cried wolf' thing going on. Warnings aren't taken seriously. People let their guard down, and boom.

(4,613 posts)The threat was sent via email to a school board member Monday evening and was traced back to an IP address in Frankfurt, Germany, according to spokeswoman Ellen Morgan.

The actual threat.

EDIT: I'm not asking you to give me the actual threat. I know you don't have it. I want the "authorities" to release the actual threat.

(21,054 posts)What I understood was that certain groups could be recognized and they were afraid of reprisals. Better to check it out and be sorry, IMO, than to ignore it.
I no longer have school age children, but I sure think that I would like to know of a bomb threat. Probably a hoax, but anymore, who knows!

(18,634 posts)Only people who can't attack but want to disrupt things send out warnings.
I hope there was other intel we haven't heard about that made this a credible threat.
If it was simply an email, (with the word 'allah' not capitalized, according to the news),
this was simply foolish, disruptive paranoia.
My money is on a Trumpish Republican who sent out the email.

What would it take to disrupt this country into anarchy?

(2,412 posts)Yes, Charlemagne, We should think about what it is like to have your home, your family, your neighborhood, your city bombed to bits and the never ending sound of the drone overhead. 500,000 people are dead in the Middle East because of our meddling and supporting the PNAC agenda. This is an epic tragedy. They are angry with us for a reason. This violence will end someday. I spent 14 years in the Peace Movement and I proud of it and still active. We need to ramp up the Peace Movement.
