In Flint, Michigan, There's So Much Lead in Children's Blood That a State of Emergency is Declared
Source: Washington Post
For months, worried parents in Flint, Mich., arrived at their pediatricians offices in droves. Holding a toddler by the hand or an infant in their arms, they all have the same question: Are their children being poisoned?
To find out, all it takes is a prick of the finger, a small letting of blood. If tests come back positive, the potentially severe consequences are far more difficult to discern.
Thats how lead works. It leaves its mark quietly, with a virtually invisible trail. But years later, when a child shows signs of a learning disability or behavioral issues, leads prior presence in the bloodstream suddenly becomes inescapable.
According to the World Health Organization, lead affects childrens brain development resulting in reduced intelligence quotient (IQ), behavioral changes such as shortening of attention span and increased antisocial behavior, and reduced educational attainment. Lead exposure also causes anemia, hypertension, renal impairment, immunotoxicity and toxicity to the reproductive organs. The neurological and behavioral effects of lead are believed to be irreversible."

(39,909 posts)from the heavily leaded gasoline we burned, to the lead based paint used to paint everything.
I would be worried if I lived in older suburb or 1st ring housing of an urban area,
especially if I were raising children.

After that, the child would have to gnaw on the painted surface to get exposed to lead. Though you will have to keep the leaded paint in mind during any future remodeling since that may get the old paint into the air.

(39,909 posts)We didn't know about Lead Paint back then.

(26,549 posts)Because it's not a perfect fix. But the "chewing on the walls" stage of development is relatively brief.
I would probably be really smart today if I hadn't eaten all that lead, and played on our heavily leaded lawns...not to mention running in the DDT fog behind the Mosquito Spray trucks.
I coulda been a contender!!!!
Actually, we (brothers & I) seemed to have survived OK,
but many, MANY of the kids I grew up with are having all types of muscular and nerve sicknesses.

(11,175 posts)Lead paint, when it peels or crumbles, is by far the most significant vector of lead poisoning. Lower-income families are much more likely to live in older housing that's poorly maintained, and much less likely to have adequate remediation (which is expensive).
I've represented quite a few children with lead poisoning. I can remember only one case that involved a middle-class family. The other lawyers and I were all struck by their status, because it was so unusual.

(41,144 posts)and other officials for ignoring known warnings about water corroded by nearby factory waste flowing in lead in pipes and the premature switch to Flint river water in April 2014, well before the Lake Huron pipeline was scheduled for completion. And there was 'no money' in the budget to clean the water for the Flint residents in the meantime. But even if they receive some financial compensation the misery and permanent damage to these people and kids are irreversible.
The manoeuver epitomizes criminal, for profit, GOP rule. People and nature be damned, it's all about business and profit. Michael Moore has been aware of this Flint nightmare I'm sure. The writer of the corporate news article naturally left out further information about contaminants that should have been included.

(41,144 posts)lead in gasoline which was altered in the 80s, maybe 70s to 'unleaded' gas. Can't recall the exact years of the change. This same Flint news article is now posted in Gen. Discussion with very good comments, some by locals about why this happened, contaminants that get into water systems like road de-icing chems, officials who tamper with water testing and more.
Lead in the water systems of Rome is also thought to have contributed to the bizarre behavior of leaders by some I believe.
