Facebook tests changes to 'real name' policy

Source: USA TODAY

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook is testing changes to its controversial "real name" policy after criticism from transgender, Native American and other Facebook users who use names on the social network that they were not born with.

Two changes are aimed at reducing the number of people asked to verify their name on Facebook who are already using the name they are known by and at making it easier for people to confirm their name, Justin Osofsky, vice president of global operations, and Todd Gage, product manager, wrote in a blog post.

Facebook users who flag an account will be required to provide additional information. And Facebook users whose accounts have been flagged will be able to provide more information about their circumstances, such as whether they are victims of abuse, stalking or bullying or if they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer.

Over the last year, Facebook has made other changes such as giving users seven days to dispute a challenge to their identity and expanding the kinds of documents people can give Facebook to verify their identity.

Is it just me who thinks this is overreach? The fucking NSA is less intrusive!!!

If someone is running a sketchy business off their platform, or engaging in nefarious themes, that's one thing, but if Uncle Fred who works for the CIA wants to get pictures of the nieces and nephews just wants to be Uncle Fred--not his full name and lifestory-- on the facebook, why are these people wanting to give him shit?

And if you want to stay hidden, you have to prove to some stranger on fb WHY you want to stay hidden?

"Say, you have a restraining order? Against whom? For what reason?"

"You have a stalker, you say? Well, is there a police report to prove this?"

"Send us copies of your relevant identification--and maybe we'll let you use our shitty, data-gathering platform."

What a bunch of assholes. I'll bet the young kids have already moved on to something else. Before too long fb will be like MySpace, only full of cat pictures and foolish cartoons. They need to just back the hell off, IMO. If there's a problem with an account that has to do with impersonation, but if that trans individual wants to be known as Ms. Clarice instead of Clarence Lipshitz, that is her prerogative and fb should just stay out of it.

Isn't Snapchat the one that eats your posts thirty seconds after you transmit them?

You'll love this: my paper did a story on teenage sexting. We interviewed some teens, and one of them said "sexting is bad everywhere but on Snapchat and there it's okay because your picture is deleted right away." Well...there is http://www.1mtb.com/5-ways-to-save-snapchat-snaps-permanently-without-the-senders-knowledge/

a photo of one's fiddly bits, replete with imperfections and bad lighting, and sending that along to one's paramour in hopes of inflaming passion. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I'd be thinking "Do you want me to look for an odd mole or an open sore, or something? WHY are you sending this to me?"

I imagine your circle of acquaintances a rather small sample size to deduce such an inaccurate conclusion. More projection than deduction in fact, I would guess.

You really think most teenage/young adult age males are going to tell a girl to NOT send him any racy pictures? Certainly SOME will, but most wont. Thats not a deduction, its reality. Most of the "sexting" news involves girls sending pictures, not the reverse. Because women have more sense about stuff like that and never ask for it.

to "give your phone number and be in even better touch with friends" almost every fucking time I'm on FB (which is, sad to say, far more often than I should be). Um, no. You already have a lot of information on me and you do NOT need my goddamned phone number also. And all of the friends and family I want to have it, or who need to have it, already do so that reason is bullshit.

Zuckerburg has this thing about everyone needing to share everything all the fucking time with everyone and that if you don't want to do that, or just want to be alone once in awhile, there's something wrong with you. He's pretty much come out and said it a few times in interviews or in unveiling new FB features. Annoying as hell.

One other thing you can't do is put prefixes before your name (Dr., Rev., etc.).

I personally know a person who was harassed by an ex-boyfriend who had no problem changing her name.

The flip side to real identity is if someone is using an account to harass someone (which HAS happened thousands of times a year). If it were a very serious situation Facebook would not only want to disable the account, but contact the police and hand over information about the person so that the police could act on it and get the person who was doing the harassment.

Most will remember the teen who committed suicide a few years ago, where the mother of one of her classmates created a fake account to harass her. I don't remember her name, but I do remember watching a TV show about the case.

They can't use their real name, for obvious reasons, if they're criticizing their governments, especially in countries notorious for human rights abuses.

But when they go online under an assumed name, the first thing repressive governments and their fanboys do is snitch out the dissidents for not using their real names.

Facebook just needs to lose the real-names policy. It causes more problems than it solves.

Indian reservation and this "real names" policy has wreaked real havoc with many native Americans with names like "Kills Pretty Enemy" or "Uses the Knife", etc., which are very real names and actually common on many reservations. They couldn't get accounts under their own names, and were called liars or ignored when they attempted to give proof. Hopefully, this policy change will change that for the better.

Not that they should have had any such policy to begin with, it's none of FB's damn business.
