A Canadian man killed a British man after the two took ayahuasca together at a spiritual retreat in the Peruvian Amazon, authorities said Thursday.
Witnesses told police the Canadian man, 29-year-old Joshua Andrew Freeman Stevens, killed the British man, Unais Gomes, 26, in self-defence after Gomes attacked him with a knife during an ayahuasca ceremony near the jungle city of Iquitos Wednesday night, said Normando Marques, a police chief in the region.
Ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic plant, is a combination of an Amazonian vine and dimethyltryptamine (DMT) - containing plants that give users psychedelic experiences when combined. It is not normally associated with violence.
The Canadian citizen was in police custody Thursday, Marques said.

(160,614 posts)Winnipeg's Joshua Stevens says friend killed at ayahuasca ceremony was 'a good man'
Stevens shaved his head to honour the late Unais Gomes
CBC News Posted: Dec 19, 2015 10:14 AM CT| Last Updated: Dec 19, 2015 10:14 AM CT
Following the death of Unais Gomes, Winnipeg's Joshua Stevens is at a hotel in Peru's serene jungle city of Iquitos, filled with pain, sorrow and loneliness, he says. Stevens and Gomes, who was from Britain, were in Peru to embark on an ayahuasca-induced spiritual journey but on Wednesday night, Gomes's life ended.
Authorities say he attacked Stevens, 29, with a knife at a ceremony and Stevens used the same knife when he allegedly killed Gomes, 26, in an act of self-defence. Local investigators arrested Stevens and subsequently released him, says Amy Mills, a spokeswoman for the Canadian government.
On Saturday, Stevens went to a hotel in Iquitos, where his fiancée, Sarah-Anne Allen, said he is waiting for authorities to mail him his wallet and personal belongings so he can return home.
"He really loved Unais," Allen told CBC, saying her fiancé is kind and gentle and that the two men became much like brothers.

A Canadian acted in self-defence when he knifed a Cambridge graduate who believed he was the Devil after taking a mind-bending drug, police investigators confirmed today.
Detectives said Joshua Stevens, 29, had been released from custody after being quizzed over the fatal stabbing of former Goldman Sachs worker Unais Gomes, 26, at a spiritual retreat in the Peruvian Amazon.
Witnesses told police Unais, from London, grabbed a kitchen knife and went for the Canadian tourist during a 'bad trip' after consuming a mind-bending brew called ayahuasca.

(8,709 posts)I know of was just a fluke. The person I know of as an Ayahuasca ceremonial participant actually came out of a trip thinking that she was an Actual God for months, in full magnificence, and then did some awful things while completely misinterpreting and quoting Christ during her tirade. She has been recently diagnosed as bi-polar.
I have heard of no other incident until now and still think of the 10 people I know of who imbibe, Ayahuasca changed their lives for the better.
I had the opportunity to partake in a ceremony over a year ago here in the U.S. I was vigorously questioned about my intent and what my expectations were. I failed the test and asked to try again another time after pondering the questions some more. I don't know exactly what my interrogators were looking for, but I've concluded it's not necessary to pursue it. I still believe though there's more benefit from the plant than harm.
