Syria crisis: Powers 'agree Syria peace process resolution'

Source: BBC News

The five permanent UN Security Council members have agreed the text of a draft UN resolution for the Syrian peace process, diplomats say.

The 15-member council is expected to adopt the resolution later on Friday, officials added.

World powers have been meeting in New York to try to advance a tentative plan to bring about a ceasefire in Syria.

The Syrian war, which is heading towards its fifth year, has killed more than 250,000 people.

Nearly 12 million people have also been displaced, the UN says.

The draft text asks the UN to bring together the Syrian government and the opposition for talks by early January.

A formal Security Council vote on the agreement is expected to take place at 2100 GMT.

Let's hope the American media/establishment is too absorbed in the primary circuses - letting these careful, methodical efforts have a chance of success. (Otherwise - there are many that would be screaming.)

I am so glad that Kerry is Secretary of State and - of course - that Obama is President. Nice also that neither is constrained by having to run for reelection.

A UN plan for Syria is a "milestone" in the efforts to end the conflict there, says US Secretary of State John Kerry.

He said the plan gave Syrians a "real choice... between war and peace".

The resolution, passed unanimously by the UN Security Council, sets out a timetable for formal talks and a unity government within six months,

However, the resolution makes no mention of the future role of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Amazingly, the US edition of CNN has over 100 stories on its front page, and this isn't one of them. CBS news has it about 20th. NBC news has about 150 items, but this isn't one. ABC has about 40, and this isn't there.

I guess Syria isn't important in the USA any more.

60+% of Americans say Pres. Obama is mishandling the US's foreign/security policy, and that they are really "skeered".

But, this major step forward is of no importance, I guess. The Repuke "FEAR TRAIN" makes better copy. GO FIGURE...
