Clinton Campaign: Data Was 'Stolen' By Sanders Campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The campaign manager for Hillary Clinton says its voter data was "stolen" by the presidential campaign of her Democratic rival, Bernie Sanders.

Robby Mook says on a Friday night conference call with reporters that "this was a very egregious breach and our data was stolen."

Mook says the actions of the Sanders staff involved "may have been a violation of the law."

This is the type of data that the Sanders camp assessed....

....

.....What was accessed

Two senior Democrats familiar with the program and the investigation told CNN that the Sanders campaign accessed turnout projections for Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, a key piece of strategy the Clinton campaign has been working on with modeling and analytics.

The Sanders team, which consisted of four people, ran multiple searches in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina and about 10 March states, including Florida and Colorado. In Iowa and New Hampshire, the Clinton campaign has ranked voters on a scale of 1-100 for turnout, enthusiasm and support, the senior Democrats said. The Sanders campaign ran two searches: "Show me all the Clinton people rated higher than 60" and "Show me all the people rated less than 30." This would be a key way of knowing who Sanders should target in the final weeks before voting: Ignore those above 60, while focus on those below 30, because they are looking for a Clinton alternative and might be open to Sanders.

The investigation into what information was lifted should only take a few days as there are audit logs and trails of the activity, which took place beginning around 10:40 a.m. and lasting for about 40 minutes, the senior Democrats said.

They added that the Clinton campaign views this as a big deal but will not say so publicly because it will fan the flames of liberal groups trying to fight with the DNC.

In a statement released Friday afternoon, the Clinton campaign called for the Sanders campaign and the DNC to "work expeditiously to ensure that our data is not in the Sanders campaign's account and that the Sanders campaign only have access to their own data."................

More information --the Truth

"the logs show the Sanders staffers took deliberate steps to harvest and store the information."

http://time.com/4155185/bernie-sanders-hillary-clinton-data/

...............According to data reviewed by TIME, the Sanders campaign appears to have obtained files with lists of voters that the Clinton campaign had cultivated in 10 early states including Iowa and New Hampshire.

Beyond simply reviewing the data, the logs show the Sanders staffers took deliberate steps to harvest and store the information. According to the logs, the Sanders staff created from scratch no fewer than 24 lists—consisting entirely of data pulled down from the Clinton campaign’s database—and saved them to their personal folders.

The logs show the Sanders campaign accessed the Clinton data for nearly one hour beginning around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. The Sanders staffers were apparently able to view unique voter information along with accompanying information about how likely the voters were to vote for the various candidates, crucial information that the Clinton campaign has likely spent millions of dollars to collect.

The Clinton campaign called for a clear accounting of the breach.

“We were informed that our proprietary data was breached by Sanders campaign staff in 25 searches by four different accounts and that this data was saved into the Sanders’ campaign account,” said spokesman Brian Fallon. “We are asking that the Sanders campaign and the DNC work expeditiously to ensure that our data is not in the Sanders campaign’s account and that the Sanders campaign only have access to their own data.”

Moreover, the Sanders staffers who carried out the breach included a top lieutenant for the Vermont senator: Josh Uretsky, the national data director for the campaign.

The Sanders campaign denied that it had downloaded any data, saying that it did not retain information from the Clinton campaign.

“They didn’t download it—they went in looked around,” said Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs, who announced Thursday the campaign was firing Utersky and that they were treating the matter seriously.

Uretsky also told MSNBC that the campaign “did not export any records or voter file data” and was simply trying “to document and understand the scope of the problem.”.................

According to NGP on their blog (http://blog.ngpvan.com/news/data-security-and-privacy): "for voters that a user already had access to, that user was able to search by and view (but not export or save or act on) some attributes that came from another campaign." http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2015-12-18/sanders-campaign-fires-data-director-after-breach-of-clinton-files

After one Sanders account gained access to the Clinton data, the audits show, that user began sharing permissions with other Sanders users. The staffers who secured access to the Clinton data included Uretsky and his deputy, Russell Drapkin. The two other usernames that viewed Clinton information were “talani" and "csmith_bernie," created by Uretsky's account after the breach began.

The logs show that the Vermont senator’s team created at least 24 lists during the 40-minute breach, which started at 10:40 a.m., and saved those lists to their personal folders. The Sanders searches included New Hampshire lists related to likely voters, "HFA Turnout 60-100" and "HFA Support 50-100," that were conducted and saved by Uretsky. Drapkin's account searched for and saved lists including less likely Clinton voters, "HFA Support <30" in Iowa, and "HFA Turnout 30-70"' in New Hampshire.

Looking for "less enthusiastic" Clinton voters to poach. That's pretty low.

35. My current take on this.
Sat Dec 19, 2015, 01:34 AM
Dec 2015

I use the VAN on a regular basis so I am somewhat familiar with how it works. I am trying to piece the incident together based on information as it comes available to me. I posted earlier based only on information from NGP. I heard the Clinton spokesman refer to the 24 lists during CNN's Weaver interview but I hadn't seen a printed story before.

The first piece of the puzzle is the usernames. In VAN, an administrative user can create additional accounts for other users. Those accounts need to be linked to an email account before they can be verified and activated. A person can create an additional account for himself using an email account different from the email account linked to his administrative account. Uretsky may or may not have done that, but at the very least, NGP has a record of the linked email accounts.

Users generally have access to files by belonging to a committee, user group, or campaign. My permissions are good for my local Democratic Party (committee). I can save search files and make them available to other members of the committee.

NGP posted the following on their blog (http://blog.ngpvan.com/news/data-security-and-privacy): "for voters that a user already had access to, that user was able to search by and view (but not export or save or act on) some attributes that came from another campaign." Putting this together with the 24 lists information, it appears the Sanders accounts were able to search the Clinton files but were either unable or refrained from printing or copying the data. If they did either of those things NGP would have log data. If the file was printed they would have a record of pdf creation. If a file was exported they would also have a log record.

The NGP blog post contradicts the information on the saving of lists in personal folders. I have no way of knowing which account is correct at this point...

HRC - the clear front-runner by a wide margin - is the "desperate" one.

The candidate who is ahead in all national polls is "getting desperate" - so desperate, in fact, that she and her operatives have "set up" BS's campaign, forcing them to retrieve and download information they had no right to access.

No doubt the "desperate" HRC camp was so scared shitless of BS's position - which is far behind her in the polls - they decided to jeopardize her entire campaign by resorting to "dirty tricks" in order to make Bernie (who, I repeat, is FAR behind her in the polls) look bad.

Yep, makes SO much sense.
