Police: Football player killed shielding girls from gunfire
Source: Yahoo! News / AP
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A high school football player was killed as he shielded three girls from gunfire as several men went on a shooting spree in Tennessee, police said Friday.
The shootings that killed Zaevion Dobson, 15, began Thursday night, said Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch. The first person shot was Lisa Perry, 46, who was inside her apartment at the time. She is expected to survive.
Rausch said Perry's 23-year-old son, Brandon Perry, and several other men then drove to the neighborhood where Dobson lived and "randomly fired multiple times."
The girls shielded by Dobson were not hurt, he said.

(111,277 posts)Sky high on semi auto anything, especially pistols, sky high for anyone without proof of taking a safety course, sky high in cities, and cheaper than dirt on the type of long guns rural people take hunting and use to keep predators away from stock.
And yes, if I moved to a rural area out here, I'd have a shotgun. I'm not anti gun. I'm just anti half wits with firepower.

(11,841 posts)Not to mention that 99% of the people who do shit like this would never pay up even if there WAS a law requiring it.
Impossible to enforce too. Nobody knows what you own or how many I have.
Its just like banning handguns; you really think people like the ones mentioned in this story would turn in their guns? They're probably ALREADY criminals so whats one more law to ignore?

(11,841 posts)I'm just giving the reality that it wouldnt stop shit like this. The PEOPLE are the problem.
No one knows what or how many weapons you or anyone else has in their home. No law is going to change that. Nobody would buy insurance in any number. Thats just the way it is. And no restrictive law will get people to turn in what they have either. Besides, you can already be sued if you shoot someone. Just like you can be sued for hurting them in other ways. Unless its justified.
Laws increasing punishment for using a weapon could have an impact. I've seen it locally; fewer gang arrests here are gun related because a few years back the punishment for your crime was doubled if you were using a weapon. The crime is still here, but gun usage has dropped.

(1,265 posts)...but also to find a way to get appropriate legal judgments against people who are negligent in handling of firearms. How many times have we seen a story that goes something like, "...died when a child picked up a handgun left on a coffee table. No charges will be filed."

And yes that should be the norm for this. If you leave one sitting around where your kid can get it, you oughta get charged

(39,171 posts)because there are few actual gun accidents relative to the number of gun owners it costs a pittance because the risk is very low. Don't forget insurance companies don't pay out for crime or criminal negligence.
There is a reason my safe full of guns has no impact on my home owners policy while my neighbor's pool raised his premiums.

(111,277 posts)or compensation for the loss of family members. Second, by kicking people hard enough in the wallet that Joe Suburb suddenly feels disinclined to hoard weapons. Third, to provide a legal mechanism to confiscate guns from scofflaws, meaning criminals and people with loose political screws.

(1,254 posts)As long as we refuse to realize we have created a culture that PROMOTES the idea using a gun is an acceptable method to solving someone's problems. This concept is continually fostered through the media thousands of times a year. Movies, TV shows, comics and video games, the most common source used to promote this theme. Don't like someone, mad at the world, think you have been disrespected, well that can ALL be remedied with a gun. Just blast away. And people refuse to accept the fact that there is a correlation between the two. They excuse the obvious by saying the violence portrayed in the media is only make believe and people are aware of that. Well OBVIOUSLY a LOT of people are taking the idea that using violence is acceptable. So many times it turns out to be young men in their teens and twenties. The parents have no idea how much their sons are affected by our addiction to violence, until the kid goes out on a murder spree. We need an awareness campaign against overly violent content in media. A few seconds rating/warning at the beginning of a movie or program is not enough. I don't suggest censorship, just that we need to start speaking out and rejecting the message. When we lose victims to senseless acts of violence, many times the responsible party is a victim too. He/she loses their own lives in the process. The potential for a productive life is thrown away when someone succumbs to the hyped delusional lure that picking up and using a gun to kill someone will solve problems.

How much more blood, agony, how many lost lives will gush out across this country until many people are courageous enough to fire all the filthy Congressmen who have been whoring themselves out to the gun industry?
