Two Straight Debates On National Security, And No Questions About The Real Threat To The Globe
Source: Huffington Post
In a Democratic debate focused on national security Saturday evening, one topic was notably missing from moderators' questions: climate change.
Even though a major climate agreement was reached recently, it didn't even come up during Saturday's two-hour debate or the GOP debate on Tuesday.
Climate change can increase the likelihood of migration pressures and change the availability of natural resources, which can lead to conflict among different groups of people. The issue has also been linked to the cause of the Syrian civil war -- which the candidates did spend a chunk of time discussing Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, doing the responsible things like infrastructure, and attention to climate change don't have an immediate return on investment. Same thing for bailing the criminal bankers out, while leaving us with the tab.

O'Malley:
The other big challenge we have is climate change. The greatest business opportunity to come to the United States of America in 100 years. We need to embrace this. I have put forward a plan that does this, that moves us to 100 percent clean electric grid by 2050.

(13,870 posts)there's this big, overriding, game changing issue facing us? There's really no way for the folks making the money off of the 'go shopping' model to spin this. Their answer is to ignore it and tell us to keep thinking Disneyland style.

(13,870 posts)I think our model is the problem. In order for things to be "good" we need to consume and increase consumption every year. It's a basic problem with capitalism. It's a system that requires infinite growth which exists in a finite physical environment. Something has to give and in this case it's the climate.

(11,841 posts)And its not going to be brought up much because the polls show the topic way down the list with voters.
And tying climate change to Syria is ridiculous. The trouble in Syria comes from the people being tired of the iron rule of a dictator and trying to overthrow him. And then fighting more among themselves than fighting the dictator's army creates even more problems than they had to start with
