US expands sanctions over Russia's activity in Ukraine

WASHINGTON (AP) The Obama administration on Tuesday imposed financial restrictions on 34 additional people and entities for helping Russian and Ukrainian companies evade U.S. penalties and other infractions, prompting threats of retaliation from the Kremlin.
The action helps "maintain the efficacy of existing sanctions" established after Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula last year and support for eastern Ukrainian separatists, the Treasury Department said.
Fourteen are linked to "serious and sustained evasion" or are subsidiaries of already sanctioned firms. The department called six separatists and two former Ukrainian government officials "complicit" in corruption or in destabilizing Ukraine. Twelve were targeted for operating from Crimea. Americans can no longer do business with those listed, and any U.S. assets they have are now frozen.
John Smith, the department's acting sanctions boss, demanded that Russia adhere to a February cease-fire in Ukraine. That agreement compelled Moscow to withdraw forces and materiel from eastern Ukraine's front lines, release prisoners, allow the Western-backed government in Kiev to reassume control over its borders and provide unfettered access to international monitors.

(29,876 posts)Moscow says it will consider countermeasures after the US announced an updated sanctions list targeting 34 individuals and entities in order to pressure Russia over the Ukraine crisis.
"Today's steps support the US commitment to seek a diplomatic resolution to the crisis in Ukraine by maintaining our sanctions on Russia," the US Treasury Department said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Kremlin, in turn, said it will analyze Washingtons decision and may develop countermeasures.
The sanctions imposed on Tuesday are a continuation of this unfriendly stance towards Russia, a continuation of the stance which has a devastating impact on bilateral relations, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
"Certainly, based on the reciprocity principle, the Russian side will initially review these decisions taken [by the US] and then pool proposals on possible countermeasures," Peskov said.
He expressed regret that despite common sense and the need to develop cooperation, Washington is following a policy contrary to [current] demands.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Washingtons attempts to manipulate Russia via sanctions are ineffective.
This is like shooting yourself in the foot in terms of currents state of Russian-American relations, which were stalled by Washington, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said.
"Being aware that all their attempts to influence us through sanctions are doomed to failure, colleagues from Washington nevertheless stick to their delusions, he said. Moscow will respond with appropriate measures, he added.

(36,418 posts)of violent reprisals. Boycotts are noncooperation, which are different from sanctions, which are economic warfare. Those who lay out the options as either sanctions or war do not appreciate that, while one is preferred to the other, they are both part of a hostile and provocative political process.

(869 posts)I like gandhi think the best way is to follow a just justice system...ie wish we could take violators to court and get justice....not always possible ...what then? coalitions are the best....also even when rulings are handed down at the international level they can just be ignored...hence back to sanctions...agree it's the innocent who suffer..always....which is why I support the countries taking in the refugees....quite loudly....what are your solutions? I strenuously support the countries coming together to impose environmental restoration of the planet and free and clean energy....as well as free education and health care...I think the best path to end war is the ability of every human at every level to have access and be able to participate in restoring and saving the planet...saving the planet and human rights go hand in hand...it's the one thing no matter what side of the argument anyone is on ...people can agree on that and organize around it...I am all for funding these improvements of our environment and the planet as a way to practice human rights....it allows anyone from a refugee to a wealthy robber baron to participate.... restoring the planet and human dignity go hand in hand and I believe gandhi was practicing this all those years ago by example.... again what are your solutions? Cheers, Maggie

(36,418 posts)be done even for those distant and different from us is the only just path for oneself. We should not impose our own absolutes on others.
Of course, people will differ on the best path, but I think all humans see the same horizon.

(6,045 posts)Seriously? When it comes to geo politics & someone like Putin how do you suggest dealing with him?
Boycotts when enough people participate can be no different than sanctions...One is done by the state the other by the people the end result can be the same.
BTW-Putin is not a nice guy.

(36,418 posts)Much of what our country has done is also very ugly and unjust. It is all the more so that it is done in our own name, and we have not done enough to prevent it.

(6,045 posts)The USA is just as evil as Putin, sorry. Yes, the USA has done things in the past we should not have done but they have nothing to do with Putin...The sanctions are just.
