Istanbul airport blast 'kills female cleaner'

Source: AFP

Istanbul (AFP) - A female cleaner was killed and another wounded early Wednesday after an explosion of unknown origin beside a plane at Istanbul's second international airport, with Turkey on high alert for possible attacks.

Airport cleaner Zehra Yamac, 30, died of head wounds hours after the pre-dawn blast on the tarmac at Sabiha Gokcen airport on the Asian side of Turkey's largest city, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported.

The explosion took place just outside the terminal building where planes park for their passengers to embark and disembark.

Turkey's private carrier Pegasus Airlines said in a statement the explosion took place next to one of its planes on the tarmac while the two cleaners were nearby.

Turkey Istanbul airport blast kills cleaner

An explosion on the tarmac at Sabiha Gokcen airport in the Turkish city of Istanbul has killed a female cleaner.

The woman who died was working on a Pegasus airlines plane overnight when the blast took place. A colleague who was with her was wounded.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, the airport says.

Armed police imposed tight security at the airport's entrance, Turkish media said, but flights were said to be running normally.

They use Istanbul as their hub. They offer some of the cheapest flights to Europe from the US,, but they usually make you go through Istanbul. That airport is a chaotic, overcrowded hell on earth. I highly recommend people not fly through Istanbul, no matter how cheap the flight.

I've never used Istanbul as a hub (only a destination) but I agree it can be very confusing.

I was going from LA to Barcelona, but they had me fly from LA all the way to Istanbul then change to a smaller plane for the backtracking flight to Barcelona. It was the longest flight I'd ever been on and resulted in a severe case of sciatica. It took longer than flying to Australia. The airport terminal in Istanbul for international connecting flights was overcrowded and chaotic, with sketchy security and no bars or places to sit down and eat. Hell, there were few places to sit down period. Most people just stood. I would never do it again, no matter how cheap the flight--especially now with ISIS using Turkey as a through way.

Explosion at Turkish airport was 'probably a bomb', experts warn

An explosion that killed one person and caused widespread damage at a Turkish airport on Wednesday appears to have been a bomb, aviation experts have told The Telegraph.

Armed police sealed off part of an airport terminal in Istanbul early this morning after an explosion killed an aircraft cleaner and damaged planes standing hundreds of yards away.

While the cause of the blast is not yet known, it comes amid a wave of Isis-sponsored terror attacks in Turkey and could raise concerns that the group has been able to breach airport security.

Turkish police have not yet commented on the cause of the blast, but British aviation security experts said it was unlikely that it could have been caused by any kind of routine mechanical malfunction on board the plane.
