Planned Parenthood suspected shooter asks to represent himself in court

Source: Denver Post

COLORADO SPRINGS — The man accused of killing three people at a Planned Parenthood clinic told a judge Wednesday he wants to represent himself and dismiss his court-appointed attorneys.

"I do not want them as my lawyers. I invoke my Constitutional right to defend myself," Robert Lewis Dear Jr. told a judge.

Defense attorneys asked the judge to clear the courtroom so the attorneys, their client and the judge could discuss Dear's statement.

The judge granted their request over prosecution objections.

much harder than dealing with talented opposing counsel. A good opponent plays hard, but fair, and will agree to all the piddling crap simply because it is the right thing to do. A judge's job is far harder with a pro se, as well. They have to be extra careful to explain the process and insure he understands. If he does, the court may still appoint counsel to aid in his understanding.

Pro se cases suck.

Those blood sucking leaches, just have to have their farce of a trial, and do everything they can to prevent him from entering a guilty plea.

It's clear that he wants to go that route, so just let him. No wonder the prosecution objected to the defense begging to clear the courtroom and put things on hold. He wants the rope, and the prosecution is more than willing to let him have it so he can hang himself.

A guilty defendant who wants to speak about his true feelings and why he did what he did. NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! We can't have that. Need to make sure he pleads Not Guilty, and come up with a defense that gives him some chance of a lighter sentence.

If the defense has it's way, we'll never hear the true motivation for his crime. We at DU all know what this was, but the right wing surely does not want to hear it from his mouth, which is why all hands are now on deck to make sure this gets covered up, and a new crazy defense theory, other than "no more dead babies" takes hold.

So if after the "fair trial" and "aggressive defense," he is acquitted, that would be an acceptable outcome?

Sorry, but I see nothing from this situation which mitigates it. He is a cold blooded killer, and at the least should spend the rest of his life in prison.

Some homicides might be justified but I'm really not interested in hearing this guy's excuses for killing a bunch of innocent people at a Planned Parenthood clinic.

Lock him up and be done with it. The taxpayers could have been saved plenty if he had been killed by the police, or had shot himself. No trial, no defense, and no tears shed by me, that's for certain.

Innocent until proven guilty is more important than any one conviction.

He represented himself, and at *BEST* he was absolutely incompetent.

He's in a federal lockup for good.
