Chilean Congress OKs law for free university education
Dec 23, 7:59 PM EST
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Chile's Congress has approved a law granting free university education to many of the South American country's students.
The law was approved by both houses of the legislature Wednesday.
The measure is a pillar of President Michelle Bachelet's reform promises. It is expected to aid about 200,000 students at state universities. Students attending private institutions are also expected to join with some conditions.
Chile's Constitutional Court had recently blocked a part of Bachelet's proposal to provide free university education to half the country's poorest students.

Yes, sarcasm.

(1,016 posts)I paid $18 per semester at Los Angeles City College and transferred to San Diego State University at $80 per semester, $50 was for the free clinic on campus. That was in the 70's, then Reagan became governor and cut education funding to the bone, schools had to raise tuition to cover the costs. That's why higher education has gotten so high, states cut taxes on the wealthy and cut education to make up for the loss of revenue.
California justified the free college, because when you get more educated you make more money, the state has an income tax, by putting you in a higher income bracket, you pay more in state income tax the rest of your working life. Sounds like a good deal for all concerned.
