DuPont to Cut 1,700 Delaware Jobs Before Dow Chemical Merger
Source: Bloomberg
DuPont Co. said it will cut about 28 percent of its workforce in its home state of Delaware in early 2016 as the chemical company proceeds with a merger with Dow Chemical Co.
The effect in Delaware will be significant, reflecting the urgent need to restructure our cost base and, as part of that effort, reduce our corporate overhead costs so that we can remain competitive, DuPont Chief Executive Officer Ed Breen said in a letter to employees. The cuts will affect 1,700 employees out of 6,100 in the state.
The job cuts announced Tuesday are part the plan to reduce the workforce of 63,000 by 10 percent and trim costs by $700 million, Dan Turner, a spokesman at the Wilmington, Delaware-based company, said in a telephone interview. That strategy was outlined on Dec. 11, the day that the companies disclosed the merger. Dow and DuPont, two historic giants of U.S. industry, will join as equals in an all-stock deal thats the first step in an effort to create three new businesses.
The jobs cuts are deeply disappointing, especially to the thousands of Delawareans who helped this company grow and succeed for generations, Delaware Governor Jack Markell said in a statement. For those affected by todays announcement, they should know that the state will do all that it can in the coming months to assist them as they evaluate new opportunities.

(3,457 posts)The Bhopal disaster, also referred to as the Bhopal gas tragedy, was a gas leak incident in India, considered the world's worst industrial disaster.[1]
It occurred on the night of 23 December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Over 500,000 people were exposed to methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas and other chemicals. The toxic substance made its way into and around the shanty towns located near the plant.[2]
Estimates vary on the death toll. The official immediate death toll was 2,259. The government of Madhya Pradesh confirmed a total of 3,787 deaths related to the gas release.[3] A government affidavit in 2006 stated that the leak caused 558,125 injuries, including 38,478 temporary partial injuries and approximately 3,900 severely and permanently disabling injuries.[4] Others estimate that 8,000 died within two weeks, and another 8,000 or more have since died from gas-related diseases.[5]

CEO Ed Breen: I wanted you to hear the difficult news directly from me; more than 1 in 4 positions will be eliminated
Just weeks after DuPont Co. announced plans to merge with Dow Chemical, the Delaware company notified employees Tuesday that about 1,700 jobs will be eliminated here by early 2016, marking one of the largest single mass layoffs to hit the First State in recent history.
DuPont Chief Executive Ed Breen announced the layoffs, which account for 28 percent of its current Delaware workforce, in a memo sent to DuPonts roughly 6,100 Delaware employees on Tuesday just four days after Christmas.
Several hundred of those DuPont employees will receive notice in January that their jobs are being eliminated; others were notified earlier this month.
All 1,700 workers are expected to leave the company by the end of March. Employees contacted by The News Journal on Tuesday declined to comment on the layoffs.

(47,522 posts)There are now several "activists" who demand to get a seat at the board of companies and then demand to... trim expenses where the easiest route is by layoff.
With DuPont it was Nelson Peltz who tried before to win seats and to force DuPont to split. But he lost the first time. Enough shareholders voted against him. But eventually he won.
DuPont is only the first. There are several of them playing with other companies.
