Venezuela Top Court Bars 4 Lawmakers From Taking Office
Source: AP
The Supreme Court on Wednesday barred four incoming lawmakers from taking office, putting at risk the opposition's newly won two-thirds legislative "super-majority."
Responding to a legal challenge filed by supporters of the ruling socialist party, the Supreme Court blocked the four lawmakers from being taking their seats when the new National Assembly convenes Tuesday.
The ruling affects three opposition lawmakers and one socialist deputy, all from the sparsely populated state of Amazonas. The court will also consider challenges to a handful of other lawmakers, but has so far stopped short of barring those representatives from taking office.
The opposition won a landslide victory in Dec. 6 legislative elections, taking control of congress for the first time in more than a decade. The coalition captured 112 of 167 seats, giving it by one seat a two-thirds majority that would allow it to rein in socialist President Nicolas Maduro. It would be able to censure top officials and rewrite basic laws and could open the door to recalling Maduro or even rewriting the constitution.

(11,841 posts)EXACTLY what many of us predicted would happen. And of course we were blasted for it as well.
This illegal regime will do whatever it has to do to keep power.
And some ill-informed should here will cheer them all the way

(9,951 posts)Maduro is now a full fledged dictator, getting the top court to do his bidding.
Where are his supporters now?

(1,926 posts)The Maduro Gang most likely rigged a lot of the elections their dying party did win.
I know this because the Chavistas demanded my wife give them her SS number (Venezuelan equivalent) to leave the country, so someone could use it to vote for her. They wouldn't let her board the plane without giving up her number. Leaving.....

(4,259 posts)darn those 'socialists'! They wanted to prevent monopolies. But the new right wing will void laws and regulations.
Do any of you really understand what's happening in S America?
Didn't think so.
Laughable.

(2,035 posts)I advise you to take yourself to Venezuela one of these days, or even Cuba for that matter, and try to live there as if you were a citizen (NOT a tourist) of that country. Hopefully that gives you some better insight.

And they are going to have no one to blame but themselves.

(4,259 posts)Did you know that we helped put Pinochet in power?
Is that what you want to happen in Argentina and Venezuela? Because of some Pavlovian slavering at the word 'socialism'?
Come on. This is the Democratic Underground.

And guess what! Chile's dictators are long gone.

(2,035 posts)I'd be glad to prove my actual Venezuelanism to you. Hell, I'm willing to send you a link to my Facebook profile, which should prove it more than well enough. Of course, I'd rather use private messaging since I don't like to give personal info out in public forums. Hit me up anytime!

(1,967 posts)The argument is akin to "Ted Cruz says income inequality in the US isn't a problem therefore it isn't, because he represents all Amercan opinion." He doesn't.

(2,035 posts)It's common for Chavista supporters to lump anyone who does not support Chavismo with right wingers. You should consider not looking at the world in black and white, it doesn't do you any favors.

(4,490 posts)No mention of the legal reasoning given by the court, or what accusations led to the seats being challenged. I could probably make a pretty good guess, but this has been a pet peeve of mine with a lot of news organizations that are supposed to employ journalists :-P

(1,967 posts)These people gave us the coup in 2002 so I wouldn't be surprised at all. They are no different from the right in the US. They want media monopolies, and they want no safetynets at all, so the rich don't have to pay taxes.

(2,035 posts)In fact, they are the ones who have openly been giving out things like cars and computer tablets to people as a campaign strategy. And not only that, Tibisay Lucena, the current director of the Electoral Council, is a Chavista sympathizer (though she doesn't admit it.) If there is any actual voter fraud going on, it's on the Chavistas' side. Stop being so naive and believing all the BS propaganda from pro-Marxist websites and Telesur.

(1,967 posts)about the center and the left in this country. Republicans always claim dems are giving out free stuff for votes. They say that simply because centrists and right wingers offer public schools and health care. They claim Obama is giving the poor cellphones for votes. The baggers call them Obamaphones. These are garden variety smears against anyone to the left of Attila the hun.

Maduro declares a "state of emergency."
Or starts a war with Guyana.
He declares himself "El Presidente" for life, or the duration of the war/emergency.
VN goes into a state of anarchy, and a military right-wing strongman seizes power.
And as to The long-gone dictator of Chile, this has *ZERO* to do with the incompetent Maduro.
