Mexican Hotel Workers Say 'Affluenza' Teen and Mom Had Gun in Their Room

Source: ABC News

The mother-son duo who allegedly fled from Texas to Mexico had a gun with them while staying at a resort in Puerto Vallarta, two hotel employees told ABC News.

...snip...

Because they wanted to extend their stay and the hotel needed their ground-floor room for a disabled woman, the hotel employees say, they moved the Couches to another room.

The new guests found a gun inside the nightstand, the employees say. They immediately called the hotel and an employee picked up the gun and wrapped it inside a bathroom carpet and put it in a plastic bag, the employees say.

The following day, according to the hotel workers, Ethan retrieved the gun after being asked whether he had left anything in the room. He took the gun without giving any explanation, the employees said.

Mexican laws on who can own firearms is very strict and as a foreigner, I'm fairly certain he is not allowed to have a firearm at all. He could be spending years in a Mexican jail.

given this description of where he's being held. Not even close to Club Fed or the Tarrant County Jail in Texas for that matter

This spoiled rotten brat should already be behind bars for the death of four innocent victims. Such a pathetic farce.

given this information? They should hold onto them pretty much forever at this point, if they can prove the gun belonged to the Couches.
There was that Marine vet, Tahmooressi that claims to have accidently driven into Mexico with a number of arms. They held him for 200 days. Mexico should try and convict Ethan for weapons charges. After his sentence is up, he should come back to the US and complete his sentence here.

they be imprisoned on Titan or something.
I'm sure any other person that comes from the US to Mexico would face hard time if they carried weapons into the country. Mexico just doesn't want to raise a stink about it in this case.

And serioulsy.... an American rich kid in Mexico.... who is hated by America.... Not a wise choice considering the cartels could just kidnap him demand ransom. They'd get their money and then send him back in a pieces. And i wouldn't care.

The lawyers clearly have a strategy. They are likely trying to run out the clock on his hearing to xfer him to adult court. He may have the right to be present at the hearing, and if he isn't back until after he is 19 they can't touch him.

His juvie sentence will have expired.

All they need to do is stretch the legal process out until april. It's all up to the mexican courts. The family has already hired a high priced mexican legal firm to handle the process. Read between the lines.

But why they (mex guvt) aren't doing anything about the firearm is curious. Mexico doesn't take that lightly. Being dumb and american doesn't help one bit. Being dumb, american, and rich only adds to the fun on their side.

Can they do anything once his juvie sentence ends? All the current penalties just cause his freedom to be revoked, but only under the juvie system, no? He still walks on his b day, correct?

It's mentioned in the article below the linked one on ABC.

That's one hell of a tough migrant station.

Someone posted an article from D magazine where the father yanked the son out of a California rehab facility because he could not afford the cost. As far as I can tell, the mother doesn't work and I'm assuming she lives off some sort of support from the father.

I don't know much about the sheet metal manufacturing industry but I really don't believe these people can sustain the legal costs to keep their son out of jail much longer.

"Couch will sleep on a cot or bunk in a semi-open bedroom shared with two or three other detainees.
Unarmed immigration guards patrol the unit ... other than the common bathrooms."

I suspect he'll need a friend to have his back.

extradition. The Mexican police will then have a way of bribing the Couches. They will be more than willing to pay said bribe to keep him out US jurisdiction

He will not spend a day in jail at least not what common criminals call jail

Alt theory is that the gun was used as backup for fucked up drug deals while he was down there

Think about it. Pizza, gringos, guns, PV = drugs
