MPs to debate banning Donald Trump from UK

Source: The Guardian

MPs are to debate calls for the US presidential candidate Donald Trump to be banned from the UK following his controversial comments about Muslims, after more than half a million people signed a petition.

The government signalled last month that it would not refuse Trump entry after he was widely criticised for saying that Muslims should be banned from entering the US.

However, the call for the sanction to be imposed on the businessman will now at least have a hearing in parliament after the House of Commons petitions committee announced on Tuesday that it was scheduling a session in Westminster Hall on 18 January.

More than 560,000 people have signed the petition demanding the billionaire businessman be barred. Politicians will also discuss a separate petition opposing such a ban, even though it only gained about 40,000 signatures – well below the 100,000 threshold for triggering a debate.

Although I guess we should be grateful to the Donald for effectively derailing Jeb's (!) campaign.

With a foreign policy team made up almost entirely of Iraq War/Iran-Contra/Air America accomplices, the prospect of electing Baby Bush this November was simply unthinkable.

And I will be writing to my MP telling her we do not want this fascist in our country.

10. 100,000 threshold for triggering a debate, petition system works well for the UK people/government

Wish more Americans would use the similar Gov. petition system we have today. Has a similar 10k sigs for a response from our government. I've read some very detailed responses about current issues like the how the Ferguson police department (and other police departments) abused peoples constitutional rights.

It probasbly won't hurt him with his supporters here. Later this week, The Donald will probably say that, after he's elected and he's still banned, he'll nuke London. Then watch his poll numbers rise.

This is a recent piece of legislation, made with heady claims of open government which is now coming home to roost. I don't think there's the slightest chance Trump will be barred from the country, but it will allow MPs to talk about Trump under parliamentary privilege.

But it will make things very awkward for the government's attempts to foster the "special relationship"
