Construction of Tennessee Mosque Halted
Source: ABC News Radio
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- Construction of a suburban Nashville, Tenn., mosque that was supposed to have been completed in 2010 has been halted and could be stopped for good after Chancellor Robert Corlew ruled Tuesday that the public wasn't given the proper notice two years ago at a meeting to approve the site plan.
Technically, it means the Rutherford County Planning Commission could still approve the site near the city of Murfreesboro, but its chances of completion are diminished.
Saleh Sbenaty, a spokesman for the leadership of the mosque, says he plans to move forward with the mosque since it's already partially constructed.
Tempers ran high with the announcement of a mosque being built in this conservative Tennessee community, with many opponents proclaiming that Islam is not a legitimate religion.

After lawsuits and arson, judge's ruling derails plans for Tennessee mosque

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
A judge rules the public was not alerted about meetings before mosque plans were approved
"Some people feel like it is discrimination," the leader of the mosque says
Critics have argued that Islam is not a true religion that deserves First Amendment protection
(CNN) -- The long-running battle between a Tennessee Muslim community and a group of critics over a new mosque took a dramatic turn Tuesday when a judge ruled that construction had to halt.
"Everyone is really shocked, many people are crying about this," Imam Osama Bahloul, leader of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, said early Wednesday morning. "We did exactly what other churches in the county did. We followed the same process that other churches did. Why did this happen? Some people feel like it is discrimination."
The judge, Chancellor Robert Corlew, ruled that plans for the new mosque that had previously been approved by a local planning commission were now "void and of no effect," CNN affiliate WTVF reported.

(13,466 posts)We have a mega-church building a branch down the street from us, the traffic is going to be hideous, and they've already forced a small restaurant my husband and I really liked out of business by buying the building they rented and hiking up the rent (I think the crowd wasn't upper-crust enough).
I know, they're "Christian" and considered good no matter what, not like those "other guys".

(88 posts)Murfreesboro is about 30 minutes south and 25 years in the past from here. Nashville is fine, we even have a mosque in our very popular 12South area. But, outside of Nashville, forget it. Our primarily Republican state congress, it has been Democrats in the past, have passed egregious anti-gay legislation, etc. I tell people, the South may be polite, but they aren't very nice...especially if you are different. When I leave Nashville, it is to go to another state/country. I don't travel here.
A Federal judge will put this to rest..it will be finished. I just pray for their safety.

(22,144 posts)The opponents of the mosque launched a very broad legal attack, based mostly on anti muslim hatred. As is the norm for such suits, they threw in everything including procedural claims. ***ALL*** were rejected by the court except for a procedural technicality that can be remedied at the next planning commission meeting. There is nothing to indicate that the planning commission change the prior vote.
There are also prior threads on DU about this.

(708 posts)Construction has not been "halted." The Chancellor's ruling, which is procedural, allows the city planners to order construction stopped. That has not happened as of this moment.
No doubt about it: there were some ugly, bigoted people who launched this whole business. I know: I live here (Nashville). But there's not really a reason to freak out over this...yet.
