California man believed part of Oregon standoff crashes van on icy road
Source: The Oregonian
A protester believed to be involved in the Malheur refuge standoff crashed on a road near Hines early Sunday, but he was uninjured.
Darrow Burke, 57, of Ukiah, California, was driving on Greenhouse Lane about a mile east of Oregon 20 and failed to navigate a 25 mph curve in his white 2003 Ford van. He traveled off the road and crashed through a barbed-wire fence, ending up about 150 feet off the roadway, said Lt. Bill Fugate, an Oregon State Police spokesman.
The van ended up on its side, but Burke escaped injury.
Fugate said Burke was cited for driving without an operators license, a violation that in Oregon does not prompt arrest or jail time.

Their mechanized division takes a hit. Glad he's OK, so he can enter jail healthy.

(5,478 posts)I just listened to what their media mouthpiece (and possible FBI informer/provacateur) Pete Santilli had to say on his YouTube channel (and yes, I'm going to take a long, hot shower now). He's all hot and bothered that some local citizens are criticizing some of the local businesses that appear to be supporting the insurrectionists, so he just broadcast all the names of these people and marked them for 'a blast', whatever that is. He stops just short of adding their addresses, but since Burns is such a small community, everyone pretty much knows where everyone else lives. I fear that some of this guy's followers will try to take some sort of action or intimidation against these locals for supporting the sanctuary and opposing the occupiers.
If you follow any links with the names of the occupiers, their vocal supporters, and the groups whose insignia are displayed on their patches and pickup truck decals, almost all either directly or eventually link back to a Sovereign Citizen type of web site or discussion board at some point. A good portion of the people that are out there supporting them are members of various '3-percenter' groups (Google *that* for another glimpse under the rock, but go into it knowing that you are going to see things that you can't unsee).
I can see why the government is waiting - these nutcases are looking for *any* trigger they can use as a flashpoint to start creating real (read - deadly) trouble, and they have a bunch of heavily armed conspiracy theorists that are very willing to try to make a name for themselves. If the roads are blocked to keep them contained, they will claim 'standoff' or 'siege' and rouse up some more of the rabble. If the power and Internet access is cut, the feds stand to lose a valuable tool that is currently allowing the nutcase to build a very strong case against themselves. Just look at how they reacted when they thought that the power station remote monitoring and control system was a part of an FBI surveillance camera system set up to watch them.
Their self-proclaimed 'judge' Bruce Doucette is trying to form a 'citizen's grand jury' to bring 'charges' against local and federal officials and employees. (This is the guy that had a detailed post on his Facebook page about how we can't live on a sphere. Essentially, he is claiming that if you pour water on a globe in the driveway, it runs right off the bottom to a flat surface - the ground - so that proves that the Earth is not a sphere, or the oceans would all fall off. Yes, they really ARE that loopy!)
These are dangerous, unstable, and extremely delusional people with access to weapons. And they have cells of 'supporters' and various hangers-on and wanna-be's around the country.
After turning over a few rocks and seeing the slimy scuttling masses under them, I see that these are a truly dangerous group of people, and not just the incompetent clowns that the Internet memes would have you believe. They are attempting to force the creation of another 'Waco' or 'Ruby Ridge' and a few martyrs that they can exploit in an attempt to stir up much more widespread actions.

(5,771 posts)..... I've had some limited and adviserial interaction with a few of the sovereign citizen sect, and they are truly screwed up, dangerous and delusional. They are pitiful folks. They do intimidate others through public disclosure of names, adresses as you descrbe and are capable of violent physical confrontation.
Although I would like the satisfaction of a more agressive confrontational approach, i think, as you suggest, there is some wisdom to the current strategy.

a) cut off all access (in & out) to the Federal facility and lands involved,
surround the place with wide perimeter if necessary. so no more supplies get in
and so they aren't using the place as a national TV stage to promulgate their bullshit.
b) cut off all utilities, jam the cell phones & computer access, cut off water, electricity, etc.
c) wait them out and arrest them when they leave, or use tear gas, as needed to force the issue.

Bundy thinks he can steal it for a select group of white trample-the-earth cattle herders. The herders in the state he invaded have asked him to get lost..
But of course, this "current culture" nonsense is nonsense. What rules is the Rule of Law plus respect for First Nations.

(14,020 posts)the 'big bad government' has, over time, enforced safety standards on vehicles -like dual brake cylinders, seat belts, air bags, etc. that probably saved this guy's scrawny butt.

WTF is wrong with Oregon motor vehicle laws ?!?

(51,129 posts)CINCINNATI (Rich Jaffe) - A man who came into the local spotlight a few weeks ago with a controversial traffic stop, is now making headlines on the other side of the country.
His name is Peter Santilli Jr. People will remember him from an innocent enough, traffic stop on Dec. 18, in Newtown. That stop briefly put authorities on high alert when it was thought that Santilli was on a terrorist watch list. ...........
Santilli is best known for his conspiracy theories regarding the 911 attacks and expressing a desire to shoot Hillary Clinton. ......
When Local 12 News submitted the public records request to Newtown police, Chief Synan was also asked if he had any idea why the criminal charge against Santilli was dropped. He again answered with a no-comment. ............
