MI5 named Britain's best gay-friendly employer

Source: Yahoo News / AFP

London (AFP) - Britain's MI5 spy agency was on Tuesday named the country's best employer for promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender diversity.

The domestic counter-intelligence and security agency came top of the annual Workplace Equality Index conducted by Stonewall, an LGBT rights charity.

It found the security service provided staff with quality employment policies, training, career development opportunities, and especially support for LGBT employees.

MI5 beat more than 400 organisations to top Stonewall's Top 100 Employers list for 2016, after coming seventh in 2015.

It makes agents vulnerable to blackmail. What better way to counter this than to be pro-LGBT?

The British intelligence apparatus is set up like the American one is.

Our FBI is equivalent to their MI5, or Security Service.
Our CIA is equivalent to their MI6, or Secret Intelligence Service.
Our NSA is equivalent to their Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ)

"Burgess and Maclean were in MI6, not MI5"

you are right, I should have said:

I thought they always were, even back to the days of Anthony Blunt and Graham Mitchell.

Peter Wright, who was deputy director of MI5, wrote about the British vetting process in his book "Spycatcher." They asked him maybe five questions and took him at his word on all of them - no investigation was ever performed, because "honourable" men would never lie and "dishonourable" men would never want to work for Her Majesty, right? Anyway, one of the questions he was asked was, "ever been queer, by any chance?" (That's how it was worded. Don't shoot the messenger.)

with a security check like that, no wonder they had so many communist spies.

asking about "queers" didn't catch Blunt and Mitchell either.

They know there are a lot of truly brilliant gay people, like some of the best code breakers from WWII.
