Blizzard for record books paralyzes New York and Washington

Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A blizzard that has paralyzed much of the U.S. East Coast intensified on Saturday, bringing Washington to a standstill and forcing the closure of roads, bridges and tunnels into New York until Sunday morning.

In all, there were at least 19 deaths in several states related to the storm. It ranked No. 3 in terms of snowfall accumulation in New York City history with at least 25.1 inches (63.7 cm), and was among Washington's biggest too, the National Weather Service said.

Thirteen people were killed in weather-related car crashes in Arkansas, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. One person died in Maryland and three in New York City while shoveling snow. Two died of hypothermia in Virginia, officials said.

After dumping nearly two feet (60 cm) of snow on the Washington area overnight, the storm unexpectedly gathered strength as it spun northward and headed into the New York metropolitan area, home to about 20 million people.

2. Slate says NYC has officially broken the record

Just one brief line, though. "7:50 p.m. ET: Oh yeah, and it's official now: This is the snowiest day in New York City history." (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2016/01/22/blizzard_of_2016_live_blog_winter_snow_storm_updates.html) I'm still looking for something more authoritative.

On edit: The National Weather Service apparently won't release the final figures until around midnight. So until then, nothing is official.

8. That might be the difference between "snowiest day" and "most snow for one storm."

You produce enough categories and you get millions and millions of records.

Most snow per day. Hour. Week. Per hour in January. Per week in February. Per storm. Per storm from the SW. Per hour in January on a weekend in an election year with the high temperature for the day between 27-28 degrees and the low that night between 23-24 while Jupiter is in opposition.

they'll ridicule "global warming" and use it so prove that this much snow means it's colder instead of warmer.

is not 'global warming' but climate chaos/extreme weather events.

at least I think this term is filtering down to mass consciousness.

The frequency and intensity of the weather events is making it harder to ignore as something as it "doesn't affect me".
