Three 'dangerous' inmates cut through steel bars to escape California prison

Source: The Guardian

Sunday 24 January 2016 02.28 GMT

Three inmates charged with violent crimes including torture and murder have escaped from a California jail and are on the run.

The inmates were last seen at 5am on Friday at the Orange County Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana, about 64km (40 miles) southeast of Los Angeles. They could have escaped any time between then and late Friday night, Lt. Jeff Hallock, a spokesman with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said on Saturday.

<snip>

He said the men used tools to cut through thick steel bars and plumbing tunnels before climbing onto the facility’s roof and using makeshift ropes possibly fashioned from bedsheets or clothing to abseil down the outside. It is not known if they had help from people outside the prison.

It was unclear whether the men were armed but they should be considered very dangerous, Hallock said.

He cut off a guy's dick then took it with him so it couldn't ever be reattached.

Interesting how he was caught: a neighbor of the victim noticed this guy's accomplice's car parked at the victim's house and wrote down the license plate! Way to be a great neighbor! That led them via DNA to this cretin.

They only got him when he traveled outside Iran.
And now he escaped. Unbelievable.

They drove the dispensary owner to a desert spot where they believed he had hidden money and then cut off his penis, authorities said. They took the dispensary owner’s penis with them “so that it could never be re-attached,” authorities said.

4. I know of this jail. Stupid for it to be right in the middle of town....

People can vanish into the population.

Most California jails are out in the middle of nowhere. If you ever did escape you would have a long hike to the nearest road over desert that's riddled with detectors.

bit more central I think, and closer to cities and courts. It sounds like these guys were still awaiting conviction and sentencing, which I guess is why they weren't in one of the more long-term facilities...

Santa Ana is where they send people busted for a few rocks and a glass pipe.

and connected by skyways, tunnels, some off-the-street path.

It has to be convenient (and hopefully safe) to haul prisoners to and from the courtroom.

But, this reminds me of the saying, "You cannot escape from the grave."

I'm sure a lot of people aren't sleeping well tonight. Especially people who testified against them.

10. These three people are accused but not convicted of these crimes
Sun Jan 24, 2016, 03:25 AM

Doesn't mean they didn't do it, but that's some context.

They were in county jail, not "prison." In the United States, "prison" refers to institutions one is sent to after a felony conviction in most cases, if the sentence is longer than 1 year (some people with sentences slightly longer than 1 year will still serve their time in county jails).

People who are not yet convicted of crimes are not sent to prison. They are housed in county jail or released on bail awaiting trial. In this case, the three inmates were in county jail awaiting trial.

County jails tend to be somewhat less secure than prisons, and county jails are often located in more populated areas than prisons, as they see a lot more traffic. A person arrested for drunk driving might well spend the night in county jail. Only after a conviction and sentence would they be sent to prison.

of the other crimes, they are going to be convicted of the escape. That is, if they are not killed upon capture. Their best bet for survival is to surrender in front of press, and follow all commands of law enforcement.

Somehow I don't think they are going to call the press so they can peacefully surrender.

Neither of them sounds particularly safe. One accused of murder, another of attempted murder, and the third one of torturing an individual in a horrific manner.

That's why I'm not too worried about their lives. And I fully support the cops doing anything that needs done to stop them. Recapture if possible, eliminate if necessary to save others' lives.
