(CNN)A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake's epicenter struck near Cook Inlet, about 162 miles southwest of Anchorage, and was about 50 miles deep.
The USGS reported that there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage, and that "weak" shaking could be felt in cities nearby.
The National Weather Service said there was no tsunami threat from the quake because of how deep it struck.

USGS pegs the shake at 7.1M, with an epicenter near Lake Illiamna, about 162 miles southwest of Anchorage at 1:30 a.m.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association says a tsunami is not expected as a result of the early morning quake.
Shortly after 2:00 a.m., the Anchorage Police Department reported that it has not received any major reports of damage or injury as a result of the strong earthquake.

"The house started to shake violently. The TV we were watching fell over, stuff fell off the walls," he said. "Dishes were crashing, and we sprinted toward the doorway."
Later, he was driving to his mother's home when he came across the stretch of K-Beach Road that was damaged in the quake.
"We launched over this crack in the road. It's a miracle we didn't bust our tires on it," he said.
Officials with the Kenai Fire Department were also at the scene of a reported "gas leak/explosion at a home" following the earthquake. The department later said it was evacuating all homes along Lilac Lane in Kenai due to "multiple gas line ruptures." A shelter had been established at the National Guard armory for displaced residents.
