Panel begins debate on limit of compensation in event of nuclear accident
Source: Jiji
The Japan Atomic Energy Commission has started full discussions by experts on whether to limit the power plant operators liability to pay damage compensation in the event of a nuclear accident.
Currently, nuclear plant operators in Japan bear unlimited liability for compensation, but some experts demand that a ceiling be set for their responsibility.
The discussions are expected to be difficult, as limiting the liability would raise the problem of how to compensate affected people and businesses for the damage in excess of the limit.
For the March 2011 triple meltdown accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.s disaster-stricken Fukushima No. 1 plant, Tepco shoulders full liability for compensation under the nuclear compensation law.
But as Tepco alone cannot finance all the costs for compensation payments and decontamination work, the government set aside ¥9 trillion in assistance, which has been provided to the company through Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corp., a public-private organization. Tepco repays the aid little by little.

(10,495 posts)The government's settlement with BP will allow them to deduct most of their payments under the oil spill settlement so that the cost is ultimately paid by taxpayers. The government wasn't willing to hold off and require BP to resolve claims with the victims before their liability to the government and their ability to continue drilling in the U.S. was paid
They have made a joke out of the Oil Pollution Act that was supposed to speed up resolution of big oil spill liability issues. They rigged a Class Action settlement so that they save tens of billions of dollars excluding tens of thousands of claims. They trapped the victims in the settlement so that they can never have their day in court and have strung them along with repeated document requests. They made it so that most cannot ever qualify for settlement money, but the Plaintiff lawyers appointed to represent all victims by the judge get $600,000,000 if the Class Settlement makes it through to the end without being overturned on appeal. This guarantees that they will never oppose the one-sided deal they agreed to and will fight to protect it so they can get the 600 million dollar bribe (Common Benefit Fund)!
