Christie 'Never Changed' His Mind About Returning to NJ for Snowstorm
Source: ABC (Local NYC affiliate)
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has shot down accusations that he changed his mind about leaving the presidential campaign trail and returning to his home state as it was pounded by a massive snowstorm.
"Never changed my mind," Christie told ABC station WABC-TV in New York on Saturday, adding that he wanted to "make sure we know exactly what we're dealing with before we make a decision about canceling events and moving back to New Jersey."
Christie drove back to New Jersey on Friday because he was unable to get a flight among the thousands of cancellations, he said. His wife, Mary Pat Christie, stayed in New Hampshire to fill in for him at campaign events.

(12,608 posts)cause it wouldn't look good if he was on the campaign trail and people in NJ suffered during the storm. Cause he did say in a news interview that he didnt have to return cause his staff knew what they were doing.smh

apparently being on the phone '7 or 8 times over the past 2 days' equates to leadership

Gov. Wolf did just fine in PA - and was on TV quite a few times.
Also - I think he will end up looking blindsided and unprepared for the flooding - which ended up being a much bigger player than the media hype may have let on.

(18,652 posts)Guess what, krispie creme? When you're pres, you have to make even bigger decisions than that. Witness president Obama getting bin Laden. There was no "exactly" involved. If you're waiting for the "exact"moment to act, you're a fail.

(129,050 posts)We used to have relatives in NH and would go up there (driving) every summer from Philly. That ain't no hop, skip, and a jump trip. It's like 7 hours. And I'm sure he wasn't doing the driving.
There were many media reports about his poo-pooing this storm and having the Lt. Gov. take over. But apparently memories of his Florida vacation during a previous winter storm, came back to haunt.
Any type of nor'easter (no matter what season) usually causes damage and flooding in NJ, particularly along the coast, and this storm had the added detriment of a full moon (with the higher tides that normally come with the full/new moons).

(4,835 posts)What a colossal misjudgement form a campaign point of view...
A LEGIT, un-contrived opportunity to appear "presidential, and in-charge"
And he tells the People/State he serves he's to busy trying to bamboozle other people into believing he has those exact qualities...
What a huge miss...
It really should be seen as ethics violation.

I think the Christie people didn't get the message about the coastal flooding threat...
Staying on the trail was a breach of ethics...

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie compared handling the blizzard that left record snow in cities along the eastern seaboard to dealing with ISIS, saying during a campaign stop in New Hampshire that his leadership during the storm demonstrated his readiness to be president and "make people be safe and secure."
Christie held a town hall in Portsmouth after rejoining his wife on the campaign trail. He had returned to New Jersey on Friday as the snowstorm approached and left Sunday after holding a briefing on the clean-up.
"Whether it's an impending storm or whether it's the scourge of radical Islamic jihadist terrorism, you have to make people be safe and secure," Christie said. "Im proud that we didn't lose one life in New Jersey yesterday because the people of New Jersey, as crazy as it seems, they listen to me."
While Christie touted New Jerseys handling of the storm as a "model response," parts of the Jersey Shore faced severe flooding as a result of the storm.
Asked by reporters after his Sunday town hall what he says to those who say he left New Jersey too soon, Christie said, "I haven't heard anybody who said that."
