DENVER (AP) The death of a 112-pound jail inmate who choked on his own vomit suffocated after Denver sheriff's deputies restrained him during a psychotic episode is drawing new attention to the way he was subdued: face-down on his stomach with five deputies holding him to the floor.
Experts warn the common but risky police tactic of restraining someone in a prone position can be lethal, especially on those with medical problems and the mentally ill, whose distress is sometimes confused with resistance.
While the method has been linked to several deaths nationwide, some in law enforcement say it remains one of the most effective ways to stay safe while controlling a combative person.
Denver officials on Friday released surveillance footage of deputies' encounter with Michael Marshall, 50, a homeless man who had been jailed for trespassing and died because of "complications of positional asphyxia," according to the medical examiner.

Fuck these chickenshit cops! How about the safety of the people they killed? Does that matter to them? Tough cops, they gang up on a 112-pound man. Tough men, doing what tough men do, killing innocent people.
If one good cop stays quiet about illegal things other cops did, then he's no longer a good cop.

(6,891 posts)because of weight on his body, he will thrash about. He can't help it. If you are the cause, and you are a cop, all you have to do is yell, "stop resisting" as you apply more pressure and he then struggles even harder to breathe, and you apply even more pressure. A Violence prone police officer can commit this depraved act because he knows he will get away with it if he is part of half a ton of officers piling on. Even worse than the behavior of the officers in this case is the callousness of the prosecuting attorney who claims killing this man was an accident because the victim already had trouble breathing due to ill health. By the way, just how much is there to fear from an unarmed, 112 pound, 50 year old homeless man with heart problems who is already in custody?

(8,175 posts)This is why many people (who are not even mentally ill) resist police force. Especially POC who are targeted by profiling but have done nothing wrong.
