Michigan Democrats seek up to $600 million for Flint water crisis

Source: Reuters

Three Michigan members of Congress said on Thursday they will seek up to $600 million in federal emergency funding to address the Flint water crisis.

Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters and Rep. Dan Kildee of Flint said they will offer an amendment to a pending Senate Energy bill that would provide up to $400 million to replace or fix lead pipes and other water infrastructure issues. The proposal would require the state of Michigan to match any federal funding awarded.

"There needs to be a sense of urgency to get this done," Stabenow told reporters on a conference call.

The proposal would also direct $200 million in federal funds for a Center for Excellence on Lead Exposure to focus on immediate and long term needs of children. It would also require the Environmental Protection Agency to warn the public of high lead levels in drinking water if a state fails to do so.

The state of Mich. should then be required to pay back these funds..considering THEY created the problem..this is what happens when states do not share revenue with their cities and town..where did all the money go???

And..what galls me - $80 Mil to Mich. without oversight? - They will decide how to allocate Fed funds?????? - insanity...

But they don't like govt..until they do!

the town of Flint pushed for and the emergency manager agreed to.

They are hoping that most Americans won't understand exactly how the emergency manager system worked, or what the culture was in those occupied communities. The manager and state have total authority and are not interested in the opinions of local officials. There are countless examples of major decisions being made in these towns with lasting consequences, over the objections of the local community.

I realize that you know all this. But many people don't.

I was on council in my small town. At the time I was serving revenue sharing was cut and we had thousands of $$$ suddenly removed from our revenue.

Since them I am quite sensitive to the plight of cities. They are vilified by politicians as hell holes of drugs etc. Then those same politicians try to make their lies come to life by starving cities through various means in a push to force privatization.

Oddly I did a google query on what % of Americans live in cities? 80.7%. Some major national politician needs to stand up for the cities.

caused this so they need to dig into the rainy fund they've amassed since busting unions, gutting welfare and poisoning people started. It's reportedly over a billion dollars. Funny how the GOP "you're responsible for yourself" mantra goes by the wayside when a nightmare caused by them is running up a big tab.

Flint residents have been royally screwed by their government. The focus should be on making them as whole again as possible including the long term consequences and making sure this cannot happen in America again. Americans should all be willing to chip in their tax dollars to help. Save the finger pointing for the criminal indictments. Those responsible should be prosecuted. If our laws are not strong enough to put these guys away then the above mentioned legislators should be leading the charge to pass new laws to make this kind of deplorable conduct and negligence a very serious crime.
