Sanders predicts Iowa upset, slams The Washington Post

Source: Washington Post

By Elise Viebeck

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) predicted he will win the Iowa caucuses in an historic "upset" vote and criticized The Washington Post as an establishment interest opposed to his liberal policy agenda.

"I'm feeling good," Sanders said on CNN's "State of the Union" one day before the first-in-the-nation caucuses.

"Our issues are out there. People are really enthusiastic. If people come out, I think you're going to look at one of the biggest political upsets in the modern history of our country."

Sanders struck an optimistic tone despite a Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll released Saturday night showing him just slightly behind Hillary Clinton, 45 to 42 percent.

Update, 5:25 p.m.: Blizzard warning issued for south-central Nebraska

Weather advisories for south-central Nebraska have been upgraded to a full-fledged blizzard warning.

The National Weather Service office in Hastings has issued a blizzard warning for noon Monday to midnight Tuesday. Affected areas include the communities of Kearney, Grand Islands and Hastings and a long stretch of Interstate 80.

Light snow is expected to develop in south-central Nebraska Monday morning and travel conditions could become hazardous by Monday afternoon as conditions deteriorate. Blizzard conditions are considered likely in that region by Monday evening and into Tuesday. South-central Nebraska could see 8 inches to 12 inches of snow. From Monday night into Tuesday, winds could be sustained at 25 mph to 35 mph and gusting to 45 mph.
*************
The news isn’t getting any better on the fierce winter storm that is expected to generate blizzard conditions Tuesday across the Midlands, making travel difficult, if not impossible.

extremely hard for campaign elections, a well known fact in politics as Dr. Rick Hardy stated on CNN in discussing the Western Illinois Univ. mock election he founded. Those students have 100% accurately predicted the winner of the presidential election for 4 decades, since 1975. For the 2016 race, they determined that Sen. Bernie Sanders will be the next US President.
Voters will make it to the Iowa caucus polls, fear not! I also believe that Sanders will be The First Millennial President.

that is saying a lot.

Bernie's strength, his major support is in the college towns and the larger towns and cities.

Hillary's support is inevitably going to be in the more rural areas and smaller towns. I read that here on DU yesterday I think. I believe that to be true based on what I know of Iowa, and I do know it pretty well or at least I knew it very well at one time.

It is easy to get to the caucus if you live in a town or city. It's going to be in the school or courthouse a few blocks away. It will be cold and maybe snowy or icy, but Iowans are used to snow and ice that blow right through your coat and sting your nose and ears. Children used to wear scarves tied around their noses and mouths when they walked home from school in the blowing snow back when . . . .

It will be tough "sledding" as they say to get to the caucus if you live on a farm some miles from the town. And that is where a lot but not all of the conservative voters will find themselves at caucus time -- on a farm some miles from the town.

I am overgeneralizing and should be ashamed of myself for doing that. But how hard will it be for young people to walk across the campus and maybe a few blocks to go caucus? Not that tough. They have strong legs for the most part and strong hearts and really want Bernie to win.

It will be a bit tougher for some of the older people.

If it snows, God is definitely on Bernie's side.

My tongue is in my cheek a little as I write that, but then . . . . I do definitely think that God is on Bernie's side. So we shall see . . . .

Trust me. I know a lot about Iowa winters. A lot.

snip: The paper's editorial board challenged Sanders's image as an "uncorrupted anti-establishment crusader" and "brave truth-teller" in a piece published Wednesday.

"When reality is ideologically or politically inconvenient, he and his campaign talk around it," the board wrote. "Mr. Sanders’s success so far does not show that the country is ready for a political revolution. It merely proves that many progressives like being told everything they want to hear."

We progressives have been dissed again ---we just "like being told what we want to hear." As if we have no brain and cannot see what's happened with Wall St., MSM, the billionaire class, Citizens United and an economic system that leaves 99% working harder for less, so that the 1% can get richer.

Go, Bernie, keep up the truth telling.

They're hoping Hillary pulls out a win and then they can ask him "what went wrong" etc. and say his campaign is losing steam. He clearly included a qualifier, "If people come out." All that being said, it's better to be optimistic than to be tamping down expectations. Hillary is doing neither, she's just biting her nails.

snip: On March 26, 2007, Chris Matthews said on his television program, "Well, The Washington Post is not the liberal newspaper it was, Congressman, let me tell you. I have been reading it for years and it is a neocon newspaper".[60]

snip: Responding to criticism of the newspaper's coverage during the run-up to the 2008 presidential election, former Post ombudsman Deborah Howell wrote: "The opinion pages have strong conservative voices; the editorial board includes centrists and conservatives; and there were editorials critical of Obama. Yet opinion was still weighted toward Obama."[63] According to a 2009 publication, in the blogging community, liberal bloggers link to The Washington Post and The New York Times more often than other major newspapers; however, conservative bloggers also link predominantly to liberal newspapers.[64]

In January 2014, the Post announced that liberal columnist Ezra Klein was going to leave the newspaper together with Dylan Matthews and another journalist to establish the new news site Vox.[65] Also in January 2014, the Post announced a partnership with the conservative-libertarian blog The Volokh Conspiracy and started hosting the blog on its website.[66][67]

The plan was for students to go back to their home districts to caucus so Bernie would capture more delegates in places other than concentrations of younger voters like college towns. At the same time, Hillary's older voters might not want to leave the house in a blizzard if they don't think they will be able to get back home. It's a nail biter.

Bless Bernie Sanders, and bless him for trying to keep the Democratic Party from recasting itself as a first-rate imitation of the GOP circa 1960, but I keep hearing the after-echoes of someone crowing of his early primary victories and crowing that 'We have big Mo!', 'We have big Mo!'.
