Sanders predicts Iowa upset, slams The Washington Post
Source: Washington Post
By Elise Viebeck
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) predicted he will win the Iowa caucuses in an historic "upset" vote and criticized The Washington Post as an establishment interest opposed to his liberal policy agenda.
"I'm feeling good," Sanders said on CNN's "State of the Union" one day before the first-in-the-nation caucuses.
"Our issues are out there. People are really enthusiastic. If people come out, I think you're going to look at one of the biggest political upsets in the modern history of our country."
Sanders struck an optimistic tone despite a Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll released Saturday night showing him just slightly behind Hillary Clinton, 45 to 42 percent.

(41,145 posts)extremely hard for campaign elections, a well known fact in politics as Dr. Rick Hardy stated on CNN in discussing the Western Illinois Univ. mock election he founded. Those students have 100% accurately predicted the winner of the presidential election for 4 decades, since 1975. For the 2016 race, they determined that Sen. Bernie Sanders will be the next US President.
Voters will make it to the Iowa caucus polls, fear not! I also believe that Sanders will be The First Millennial President.
JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)that is saying a lot.
Bernie's strength, his major support is in the college towns and the larger towns and cities.
Hillary's support is inevitably going to be in the more rural areas and smaller towns. I read that here on DU yesterday I think. I believe that to be true based on what I know of Iowa, and I do know it pretty well or at least I knew it very well at one time.
It is easy to get to the caucus if you live in a town or city. It's going to be in the school or courthouse a few blocks away. It will be cold and maybe snowy or icy, but Iowans are used to snow and ice that blow right through your coat and sting your nose and ears. Children used to wear scarves tied around their noses and mouths when they walked home from school in the blowing snow back when . . . .
It will be tough "sledding" as they say to get to the caucus if you live on a farm some miles from the town. And that is where a lot but not all of the conservative voters will find themselves at caucus time -- on a farm some miles from the town.
I am overgeneralizing and should be ashamed of myself for doing that. But how hard will it be for young people to walk across the campus and maybe a few blocks to go caucus? Not that tough. They have strong legs for the most part and strong hearts and really want Bernie to win.
It will be a bit tougher for some of the older people.
If it snows, God is definitely on Bernie's side.
My tongue is in my cheek a little as I write that, but then . . . . I do definitely think that God is on Bernie's side. So we shall see . . . .
Trust me. I know a lot about Iowa winters. A lot.

(18,652 posts)snip: The paper's editorial board challenged Sanders's image as an "uncorrupted anti-establishment crusader" and "brave truth-teller" in a piece published Wednesday.
"When reality is ideologically or politically inconvenient, he and his campaign talk around it," the board wrote. "Mr. Sanderss success so far does not show that the country is ready for a political revolution. It merely proves that many progressives like being told everything they want to hear."
We progressives have been dissed again ---we just "like being told what we want to hear." As if we have no brain and cannot see what's happened with Wall St., MSM, the billionaire class, Citizens United and an economic system that leaves 99% working harder for less, so that the 1% can get richer.
Go, Bernie, keep up the truth telling.

(65,076 posts)Clearly, given all the tough rhetoric on ISIS, taxes, taking back America, immigration, etc. the whole republican field is just proving that many conservatives like being told everything they want to hear!
So, really what they're saying about Sanders applies to every single person running, and to a higher degree on the radical right.

KingCharlemagne
(7,908 posts)I still have an ounce of civility left, I will point out that they argue her crowds aren't as big because she's already a known quantity to her supporters. IOW, they don't need to come to rallies to support her.
Not sure I buy that, as I was in Madison, WI in 1992 when Bill Clinton rolled into town and there was a huge outpouring for him on the grounds of the state capital. I don't remember now whether he had already sewn up the nomination when he appeared there. So I may be proffering a false analogy.

They're hoping Hillary pulls out a win and then they can ask him "what went wrong" etc. and say his campaign is losing steam. He clearly included a qualifier, "If people come out." All that being said, it's better to be optimistic than to be tamping down expectations. Hillary is doing neither, she's just biting her nails.
