5 restaurant workers died in fire of boss-owned home
Updated 5:09 pm, Monday, February 1, 2016

NOVI, Mich. (AP) — Five men who appear to be from Mexico likely were overcome by thick smoke and died in a fire at a home owned by their boss, who owned a Chinese restaurant, authorities said Monday.

The men were found in a basement that had stairs to the first floor but windows made of glass block, which would prevent any escape in a sudden emergency, said David Molloy, public safety director in Novi, 20 miles northwest of Detroit.

"Visibility was zero. The way the fire was developing, they were likely overcome by the smoke and couldn't make it" up the stairs, Molloy said of Sunday's fire. He added that the cause could be a mattress in the basement ignited by careless smoking.

Autopsies and efforts to identify the men were ongoing, although the victims appeared to be from Mexico, based on documents and evidence. It isn't known how long the men, in their 20s and 30s, had lived in the home or worked at the Chinese restaurant, Molloy said.

What's a few lives when it comes to profits?

Seriously, though. Crap like this just makes me so angry that our country has devolved to a big ass cash register and everything is monetized. Life, air, water, health care. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

at in company owned housing and then have to pay huge rents for it. It is an abuse. I wonder if these men are some of that group?

There wouldn't be H-1B visas for kitchen workers in a Chinese Restaurant. H1-Bs are supposed to be for people with specialized technical knowledge to fill positions where there are no qualified American candidates (emphasis on the word SUPPOSED). These poor guys were probably undocumented dishwashers and prep cooks.

to come and work for a period of time. They are mostly uneducated and when a group were brought in by a hotel in our area - the unions and the churches got together and helped them out of a near slave situation. The hotel never tried that trick again.

H-2B - seasonal unskilled or low-skilled workers in non-agricultural occupations
H-2A - seasonal unskilled or low-skilled workers in agricultural occupations

H-2B or A visas usually have an employer provide housing. There is no such requirement with the H-1B. If I do have a gripe with DU is on the H-1B topics. I choose not to respond to a lot of highly inaccurate information on the H-1B. While the H-1B is not without faults, the real danger to professional workers is not the H-1B but the L-1B. I've commented on this many times, but to no avail (never mind that immigration - particularly business immigration - is my profession).

H-2Bs are common in the hospitality industry and, IMO, a scourge and very likely fertile ground for labor and human trafficking.

We have many farms and a couple of meat processing companies in my area that bring workers from Mexico, promise to get them jobs in a legal way. Then when they get here, thoisands of miles from home, they discover it's not so legal after all, they have to live in the boss's housing. They struggle to make enough money to be able to quit and pay for travel and housing to go home or to a relative's. They are basically stranded and have no choice but to become the company's slave laborer.

In this circumstance, the restaurant owner might have been taking advantage. Or maybe they were just trying to help them out the best they could.

Seems unfair to judge until we know more.

protection. It is a big problem. No smoke/CO detectors, inadequate emergency exits, etc.
