Dramatic pictures show hole in side of Daallo Airlines jet (Somalia to Djibouti flight)
Source: Irish Mirror
These dramatic photos show a gaping hole in the side of a Daallo Airlines plane after it caught fire thousands of feet in the air this morning.
The images have emerged amid claims by African locals that they saw a severely burned body fall from a passing jet several hours ago.
Flight D3159, travelling from Somalia to Djibouti, reportedly set ablaze just five minutes after taking off from Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.
It was forced to turn around and perform an emergency landing at the Raas Cabaad-based airport, where it was met by emergency crews. Alarmingly, photos of the scene appear to show a massive hole in the fuselage on the jet's right hand side, just behind its R2 door.

(10,056 posts)So not ground fire.
A small bomb that didn't fully detonate?
I bet that was terrifying as fuck.

(26,355 posts)Electrical fire, especially if the plane wasn't being maintained right.
Then when there's a short, and something catches fire, then what happens if the fire happens right next to the plane's skin, and the plane's pressurized?
Yeah. Metal weakens, then the pressure causes the skin to fail and blow a hole in the fuselage.
In any case, bomb, or just an unsafe plane, I think it's safe to say that this plane's totaled.

(10,056 posts)but for it to heat and weaken the aluminum skin it would have filled the plane with toxic smoke and caused tons of internal damage/casualties.
I guess we will see what gets reported.

(24,720 posts)The pressure vessel is pretty tight depending on many factors and from all appearances this area is the mate point of the forward mid cabin to the over wing mid cabin on this aircraft.
Look at the top of the hole , five windows from the mid door #4 you will see a faint line with a double row of rivets, and it looks like it is a A319-320 or 321 type certificate A/C.
If you look closely this picture shows that it is over the forward wing box near the wing spar and near the center fuel tank--------------if this was a bomb---------------------lucky.
And whoever tried this knew exactly wear to sit

(26,355 posts)Very lucky, glad the plane's crew was on the ball, and able to get that plane on the ground.
Maybe it was a bomb, I suppose sooner or later we'll find out. If it was a bomb, there would be recognizable bits for forensics people to analyze.

Bomb likely caused Somalia plane blast, say U.S. government sources
MOGADISHU | BY ABDI SHEIKH
Investigators believe a bomb probably caused the onboard explosion that forced an Airbus A321 to return to the Somali capital of Mogadishu for an emergency landing this week, U.S. government sources said on Wednesday.
One man was killed by the blast on Tuesday on the Daallo Airlines plane, officials said. Local authorities north of Mogadishu said the body of a man, believed to have been sucked out through the hole in the fuselage made by the blast, was found in their area.
The U.S. sources told Reuters on condition of anonymity that hard forensic evidence was lacking and no group is known to have claimed responsibility for the blast.
There was no immediate comment from al Shabaab, the Somali Islamist group that has waged an insurgency against the Western-backed Somalia government. It has carried out regular attacks on officials, government offices and civilian sites.

Or as Gawker put it, this was closer to a Jackass stunt than a terror attack.
He could have done more damage if he tried playing Beehive Tetherball aboard the aircraft.
