Multiple people dead in Texas shootout
Source: CBS News
At least four people died after a shootout in South Texas, and a standoff with police was ongoing, CBS San Antonio affiliate KENS-TV reports.
Fire department officials told the station the standoff was inside a small mobile home park.
Officials told the station that shots have been fired at sheriff's deputies.
Border Patrol agents and the Texas Department of Public Safety were assisting in the standoff, fire officials told the station.

(2,493 posts)That show open carry caused this. You do know that Texas is one of the last states to allow open carry? Been legal in Vermont since about 1776 or so.

(3,071 posts)I have not seen any disruption here from open carry. I personally don't hold with it. Have only seen one instance of open carry since it has been legal. By the way, we are the 45th state to legalize open carry. What has happened in the other 44?

lark
(23,155 posts)with stand your ground laws that allow killing anyone for any reason at any time, as long as you are a adult white male. Totally hate and would like to see abolished both stand your ground and open carry, but think stand your ground laws are more dangerous.
TeddyR
(2,493 posts)Because of stand your ground laws OR open carry in Florida?
lark
(23,155 posts)but seems to me that I've heard about 5 cases of stand your ground killings starting with Trayvon. Think the recent killing of a woman in a movie theater by an intoxicated gun idiot was from open carry and stand your ground and think that was in my state, but could have been another? I don't read the daily fish wrap or watch msm tv news, only see it when it's posted here or an article in NYT or Daily KOS.

But I'll defer to your experience as an expert with violent Texans.

(3,071 posts)I don't see that it has caused much trouble. Mostly I see wild (hopeful?) speculation. What you see in this thread. Shopts fired at sheriff's officers and the immediate reaction is knee jerk second amendment comments and then open carry.

NickB79
(19,258 posts)Many for far longer than that. Same goes for stand your ground laws: many states have had such laws on the books for decades.
At the same time, the number of gun homicides is currently at the same level per capita as the late 1960's/early 1970's. It's half what it was in the early 1990's, the peak of gun homicide rates in this country.
What would adding open carry, as stupid as it is, do to change all that?
marble falls
(57,204 posts)1. What is "many states"? What are the restrictions, ie: for private security or just any mook off the street?
2. While one on one killings have dropped, multiple homicides have increased dramatically.
3. Open carry (as well as concealed carry) when mixed with stand your ground as instituted since 2000 has contributed to more shootings as evidenced in Florida and Texas in particular.
I used to believe if I wanted an AA gun I should be allowed to have it, I wanted no registration at all.
Now I want an end to non employment concealed carry, I want anyone with a protection order or with active charges of domestic abuse disarmed. I want back ground checks with any previous crimes committed around guns as a prohibiting factor. I want all adults whose weapons end up in the hands of children under 16 arrested and charged, and if convicted - jailed and prohibited from owning ever again. I want gun safety taught just like driver's training.
You want guns, fine, but lets make it harder to abuse and be abused by them.
I own firearms myself.

(19,258 posts)1: All 50 states have had legal concealed carry since 2013, as Illinois's CCW ban was struck down. Here is a GIF that shows how CCW has spread to all 50 states since 1987: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rtc.gif
2: Since the vast majority of killings have always been one-on-one, the increase in mass shootings has had almost no impact on the overall murder rate in the US. As I said before, the US gun homicide rate has dropped almost 50 percent since 1993, even with the increase in mass murders and an increase in CCW permits and CCW-friendly states: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2013/05/07/181998015/rate-of-u-s-gun-violence-has-fallen-since-1993-study-says
3: I'd like to see some evidence to support that conclusion. It wouldn't surprise me if it were true, as I'm no fan of open carry, but the correlation doesn't seem to be there at this time. Most states that have open-carry laws also require you have a concealed-carry permit to do so, which means the same yahoos that are open-carrying have likely been concealed carrying for years. Open carry, as stupid as it is, probably doesn't make things any worse than it already was.
I also own firearms. I don't conceal carry, and have no need or desire to do so. I just don't see open carry as a tipping point where all hell breaks loose, seeing as it really changes nothing compared to the previous 20 years or so.

(18,652 posts)I've spent considerable time in AZ near the border. The drug smugglers are of concern to locals and there was a case of someone murdering a local rancher who was actually helping Mexicans who crossed the border, leaving out water and so on. This has made locals very wary since they don't know who's crossing for jobs and who is smuggling and carrying weapons.

(19,258 posts)Out of the roughly 11,000 homicides committed with firearms every year in the US, around 250 are due to rifles of all types, like assault rifles and hunting rifles.
Odds are more in favor of handguns or shotguns.
