Anti-Islam Groups Rally Across Europe; Clashes In Amsterdam

DRESDEN, Germany (AP) -- Protesters rallied against Islam and immigration in several European cities Saturday, sometimes clashing with police or counter-demonstrators amid growing tensions over the massive influx of asylum-seekers to the continent.
Riot police clashed with demonstrators in Amsterdam as supporters of the anti-Islam group PEGIDA tried to hold their first protest meeting in the Dutch capital. Only about 200 PEGIDA supporters were present, outnumbered by police and left-wing demonstrators who shouted, "Refugees are welcome, fascists are not!"
Dutch riot police detained several people as officers on horseback intervened to separate the two groups of demonstrators. It was not immediately clear how many people were detained.
In Germany, up to 8,000 people took part in a PEGIDA rally in Dresden, according to the independent group Durchgezaehlt, which monitors attendance figures. Up to 3,500 people took part in a counter-demonstration on the other side of the Elbe River that divides the city, it said.

(454 posts)Suppression could only embolden people and create a really bad reaction.
If it grows we also have uncertain events on the horizon.
is headed for a far right turn in their next elections.
Merkel is an idiot.
I fully expect to see her swinging from a lamp post before the year is out.

Aside from its nationalist and anti-Islam stance, the group has also sided strongly with Russia. Several Russian flags were flown at Saturday's rally in Dresden

(4,462 posts)Authorities seem more than capable of dealing with far right demonstrations (although their competence suddenly, and quite noticeably, vanishes when faced with migrant criminality).
The real concern is that these protests represent ever increasing popular sentiment strongly turning against liberal (and failed) migrant policies, and the effect of such resentment at the ballot box in various upcoming European elections.

(24,692 posts)is some increased risk of a foreigner committing a crime (terrorist act or other).
To enhance our security it would be best to ban all foreigners from entering the country. Some in the GOP would ban all Muslims, perhaps all Mexicans and who knows who else. I don't know many liberals who want to ban all foreigners for an increase in security.
Obviously the risk associated with 'doing the right thing' should always be evaluated, but the risk does not have to be zero to do the right thing.

(4,462 posts)It was an instance of hundreds of thousands or more of mostly young single men from a demonstrably different culture entering over a very short time period without any notable vetting or sufficient preparation or resource allocation.
One needn't be remotely isolationist to realize it was a disaster waiting to happen. The fact that the authorities effectively tried to cover-up large-scale serious migrant crime only made the political situation far worse and diminished faith in both government and law enforcement.
When you have events like Cologne happening in many cities across Europe, it's really not unfair to inquire just how many of your citizens need to be sexually assaulted or killed by non-citizens before inviting them in is no longer the "right thing" to do.
