Gloria Steinem Apologizes for Implying Women Back Sanders to Meet Men
Source: NBC News
Feminist icon Gloria Steinem has apologized for implying that younger women have chosen to support Sen. Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary because they want to meet men.
On the Friday edition of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," the host pressed Steinem on the contemporary state of feminism. Steinem disagreed with the notion that younger women had become complacent about the Roe v. Wade decision, which held that a woman's right to have an abortion fell within constitutionally protected privacy rights.
"I find the young women very, very activist and they're way, way more feminist than we [were]. I mean, we were like 12 crazy ladies in the beginning. Now it's the majority," Steinem said. "But I do think that gratitude never radicalized anybody, you know. I did not say, 'Thank you for the vote.' I got mad on the basis of what was happening to me. And I think that that's true of young women too. So they're mad as hell because they're graduating in debt. And they're going to earn a million dollars less over their lifetime to pay it back. You know, they're mad about what's happening to them."
Maher subsequently asked the activist why so many younger women were not supporting Clinton in her race for the presidency. A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll that surveyed New Hampshire Democratic primary voters found that 64 percent of women under 45 supported Sanders, a 29-point advantage over Clinton.

Then she should apologize to the transgender community for years of intolerant speech.

(13,616 posts)by denying the fact that many young women do not support Hillary because THEY DO NOT LIKE HER STATED POLICIES and PAST ACTIONS, Gloria gets to tap-dance.

(6,419 posts)She may have said something she wasn't really thinking about clearly and is wrong but she was never just about her celebrity.
She was raised by a mother who was mentally ill and they were so poor that at one point, as a small child, when she was asleep she was bitten by rats so badly that she almost bled out and had to be taken to the emergency room. Her father abandoned them.
I don't know if her mother is still alive but Gloria took care of her all her life. She also lost her husband to cancer after only a few years of marriage. She may look like she grew up well off, and she may sound like it because she's educated, but condemning her and assuming you know anything about her is just plain wrong.

(1,686 posts)She claims to have "misspoken" and accuses people of "misinterpreting" her. BS!
"In a case of talk-show Interruptus, I misspoke on the Bill Maher show recently, and apologize for what's been misinterpreted as implying young women aren't serious in their politics. What I had just said on the same show was the opposite: young women are active, mad as hell about what's happening to them, graduating in debt, but averaging a million dollars less over their lifetimes to pay it back. Whether they gravitate to Bernie or Hillary, young women are activist and feminist in greater numbers than ever before."
What is "talk-show interruptus?"

But hey, don't let me get in the way of the outrage du jour.

(1,859 posts)I'll post this here, it's Hillary playing the gender card again, in a 5 min clip of the debate with Bernie 3 nights ago and having her entire corrupt presidential run handed to her on a plate. Would anyone in that audience vote for her after Bernies reply? I doubt it.
Watch for 5 mins because after she shows no substane he hands it to her. He's done by min 17:30(5 mins after it starts) Most of it is Hillary:

(34,582 posts)have no idea the battles women like Ms. Steinem fought on their behalf. They have bought too deep into Christianity and right wing talking points. I remember when I took a US government course. After discussing Roe v Wade we were asked who supported the decision. There was me, another 40 something male, and the rest were recent high school graduates. Half the class was female. Only me and the other "old" dude raised our hands.
