Jailed Oregon occupation leader calls for elected officials' support

(Reuters) - The jailed leader of the occupation of a U.S. wildlife refuge in Oregon, in a statement released on Monday, called on elected officials from mostly Western states to voice support for free speech and civil disobedience and to visit their constituents in federal custody.
"It is your duty to hold federal agencies at bay, protecting the people in your state," said Ammon Bundy, according to the transcript of a telephone call he made on Saturday from jail and released by one of his lawyers.
Bundy also urged elected representatives in Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, Washington state and Ohio to support the right to assemble.
Bundy and 10 others were arrested in Oregon in late January, most of them during a confrontation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and state police on a roadside where a spokesman for the group, Robert "LaVoy" Finicum, was fatally shot. A 12th member of the group turned himself in to police in Arizona.

(16,090 posts)This wasn't "civil disobedience" this was an attempt at armed confrontation! And was making all kinds of statements during his little tantrum...the fact that he's calling for elected leaders to support his stupidity, shows that his right to free speech still hasn't been violated!
He could have made his point without trespassing, and he has right to assemble...as long as he abides by the law...which he didn't!!!
I'll bet Bundy and Finicum were going to go down fighting, only Bundy forgot to tell his buddy Lavoy that he changed his mind.

This is a part and parcel of a well funded Political Campaign by certain Republican operatives and financed in part by Koch Industries with the tacit support via the Largest Church in Utah.

(35,701 posts)There are a bunch of Western states who have enacted Public Land Transfer Acts. It all seems to be a coordinated attempt to pressure Congress into selling off federal land to states and private interests. One goal is to use the land sales to pay down federal debt and the other goal is to put large areas of the west into private ownership by large timber, energy and mining interests. This would fit right into the plans of the Koch brothers so they are indeed the prime suspects. If the Feds dig deeply enough I believe they will find that the Bundys have some big financial backers - probably the Koch brothers although that will be very difficult to prove. I am sure they covered their tracks well. I doubt that the Bundys even know where the money came from.

It is common knowledge among certain groups who use Federal Land for recreation. If you ask the right questions and do a bit of digging, bingo, takes time, there so many shell companies and so many dead ends, but, someone will find the source.

(10,279 posts)me a fractional owner. I do not want to sell. The Federal Agencies opposing you are working in part for me. I want them to evict you. The U.S. Constitution gives you the right to pursue happiness, but not by grabbing USG land. I want you pursuing that happiness elsewhere -- off of USG land. Because you have become a problem lessee, I want you permanently prohibited from every again leasing USG grazing land. Regret that I can not find canned pinto beans w/garlic to send to the bandito camp. But, that meal is served in our better Federal prisons.

(22,671 posts)What's all this cowtowing down to "elected officials?" Bundy and his bunch are Posse Comitatus followers, which doesn't recognize ANY authority above the local sheriff.

(35,701 posts)Unfortunately for him the Feds had other ideas. Since that didn't work out he has decided, well maybe elected officials do have a role to play. Ammon is not known for his clarity as to just what it is that he believes. Pretty much making it up as he goes along. Well he will have some time to bone up on his civics anyway. Buh bye Ammon. See you in 5-10.

The Latest: Nevada lawmaker to support Oregon occupiers
The Associated Press
PORTLAND, ORE. - The Latest on an armed group that took over buildings at a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon (all times local):
4:55 p.m.
A Nevada state lawmaker says she will travel to Portland, Oregon, this week to protest the jailing of members of an armed group that took over a national wildlife refuge.
Michelle Fiore, a Republican state Assembly member from Las Vegas and an outspoken gun rights advocate, told The Associated Press she plans to fly to Portland on Wednesday ahead of a Thursday meeting involving lawmakers from several states who are members of a group called the Coalition of Western States. The group opposes federal management of Western lands.
Fiore says the people jailed for seizing the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Oregon, last month were "exercising political free speech."
The jailed leader of the standoff had earlier called on elected officials to support his cause. Ammon Bundy is among 16 people who have been indicted on charges of conspiracy to interfere with federal workers.
