(32,324 posts)Why the elederly nuns, are paying for it! That's who!
They are now seeing much of have seen their ability to have anything like decent health care or decent pensions go POOF!
Much of the financial largesse that the Catholic Church held back in the early 1980's has been absorbed by the tremendous number of priest abuse legal cases. The legal settlements and fees are often quite large, but the very monsignors and bishops who allowed this abuse to continue for decades are not worrying. They will still have their rounds of golf and their fancy cars and their prestigious cathedrals.
Only the elderly nuns will suffer

It isn't like they asked to get molested anymore than the boys did.
This is never going to go away. Pope Francis has to clean out this stinking midden or nothing he says can be taken seriously.

(12,157 posts)There funds cannot be used in diocesan legal settlements unless it the perpetrator was a member of the order. The elderly nuns are having financial difficulties because the orders relied upon fresh new members to bring in money. That has dried up. Many orders of nuns are flat broke and have been for years. SO even if their funds could be tapped they mostly don't exist.

Diocese of Joliet -The David Rudofski Child Protection Archive
(TrueDelphi's edit: The following information comes to the public due to priest victim
David Rudofski, who deserves being lauded for outing the abuse of the priests and the complicity of officials within the Holy Mother Church)
A large selection of Joliet diocesan files regarding the sexual abuse of children by priests, and the mishandling of those crimes by the diocese, was released by abuse survivor David Rudofski and his advocates on April 30, 2014. The release was the latest step in a dramatic story that dates back to the early days of the diocese, which was erected in 1948 from the Chicago archdiocese and the dioceses of Peoria and Rockford.
The documents, which are provided in their entirety below in optimized, easy-to-download form, have much to tell us about the horrifying details of individual cases and the methods used by the Catholic hierarchy to protect the priests involved while containing the information about their crimes. Rudofskis struggle to make the documents public highlights the foundational role played by survivors in the somewhat greater accountability we see today, and makes clear what is driving that accountability. The document release also sheds light on the generally still poor state of accountability post-Dallas, owing to the weaknesses of the Norms as revised by the Vatican and the failure to implement the aspirational language of the Charter. The Rudofski Archive argues for an increased commitment by the bishops to list their accused and make public the voluminous files that the dioceses and religious orders hold.
David Rudofski was sexually assaulted by the Rev. James Burnett at his First Confession in 1982 at St. Marys church in Mokena, Illinois. His molestation was a crime, and because it was perpetrated during confession, it was one of the gravest offenses a priest can commit under the Catholic churchs own Code. Yet the file demonstrates the way in which a priest such as Burnett, who is accused by three persons, two of whom were abused in the confessional, can be effectively shielded by the framework established by the U.S. bishops in Dallas in 2002. What the bishops did not anticipate in Dallas was that the survivors of clergy abuse would take the bishops commitment to transparency and responsibility much more seriously than the bishops themselves.
Rudofski refused to settle with the Diocese of Joliet without the release of the files for all the accused priests whose cases were mishandled during the same time that Burnett was abusing Rudofski and Dan Shanahan (the survivor who first went public about Burnett's abuse). Rudofski was supported by his attorney Terrence Johnson, more at link mentioned in post by Bob TheDrummer

(15,882 posts)A former Catholic priest faces a first-degree murder charge for allegedly killing a onetime beauty queen who was last seen alive the night he heard her confession.
John Feit, 83, had long been the main suspect in the 1960 death of schoolteacher Irene Garza, but he wasn't arrested until Tuesday in Scottsdale, Arizona.
According to an indictment unsealed Wednesday, a grand jury in Hidalgo County, Texas, decided there was enough evidence to charge that Feit, "with malice aforethought, (caused) the death of Irene Garza by asphyxiation in a manner and means unknown to the grand jury."
Garza was last seen alive the night before Easter 1960, when Feit heard her confession at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen, Texas. Five days later, searchers found the body of the 25-year-old former Miss South Texas facedown in a canal.

(22 posts)When little Bush got in office within a month they started the so-called Faith-Based Initiative program, doling out tons of $$$$$$$ to all these different Christian churches across the this wonderful land. The Catholic Church was reported to have received over $800,000,000 from this program and that was over a few years ago.
When churches get OUR tax money, their "own" money from their members can then be freed up to do whatever they want, like, fight against civil rights for people they designate as sinners. They also use this freed money to settle all these abuse cases that have been coming up. Without all the tax money, these churches would have gone under, which would have been righteous considering their abuse against so many children here and around the world.
Payment to any church is unconstitutional. Sadly, the dummies in our cultural only know of one ammendment, the gun one. (2nd)

(24,006 posts)...horrifying.
bobthedrummer
(26,083 posts)horrifying since so very little has been done to advance some justice to the survivors and their loved ones. A case in point is the cover-up and continuation of what is called the Franklin Credit scandal-in which vulnerable children were raped, abused, experimented on, bought and sold by those that were supposed to protect them, there was murder of investigators, advocates, and other children, there was corruption on a scale that is beyond imagination.
Those that attempt to justify their own bigotry and hypocrisy always get caught by those of us that love the truth-in every level of meaning there is.
Review the thread below and add to it, people.
