Turkey shells Kurdish-held areas of Syria's Aleppo: monitor
Source: AFP
Beirut (AFP) - Turkish artillery on Saturday bombarded areas of Aleppo province in northern Syria controlled by Kurdish forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
The monitoring group's head, Rami Abdel Rahman, said Turkish shelling struck areas of Aleppo, including Minnigh, recently taken by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia from Islamist rebels.
Ankara considers the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its YPG militia to be branches of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state.
The shelling came shortly after Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Ankara would, if necessary, take military action against the PYD. A YPG source told AFP that the Turkish shelling targeted the strategic Minnigh military airport, which Kurdish forces retook late on Wednesday.

(36,745 posts)The Saudis will come from the south up to Raqqa and the Turks down from the north to Aleppo and then to Raqqa. Daesh will put up no opposition to them, since they are simply Turkish and Saudis proxies.
The Iranians will have none of this, IMO. They will come across Iraq to meet the challenge under Russian air cover. Won't be a bit surprised to see Kharg Island and Ras Tanura up flames with a month or so.
We are probably a couple days away from The Great Middle Eastern War.

(950 posts)be right about being 'a couple of days away from The Great Middle Eastern War'.
The US needs to make it crystal clear to both Turkey and Saudi Arabia that we will disinterest ourselves in their fate. They may well be left in ruins, but they're not going to take us down with them.

(35,320 posts)Since Russia's pretty indiscriminate in its bombardment. Consider Groznyi, with all the same rhetoric.
And the justification that it was better for a 1000 civilians to die instead of 1 Russian soldier. Apply this to Assad's troops, and, well ... (Yes, this was published in an article cowritten by one of Putin's top advisors years ago, the other writer being Strelnikov, the former military leader of a large chunk of the DNR's forces in the Donbas.)
Then again, it might result in fewer deaths. I suspect Erdogan would be quite content with the Syrian Kurd's under Assad's heel as they were before, persecuted and oppressed but most importantly, powerless. The question is, Will Turkey continue to bombard once the area's taken over by Syrian army forces?

(101,321 posts)On Saturday, Turkey began shelling the militia, which it says is linked to the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
The YPG militia, which is based in Syria, has rejected a demand by Turkey to leave areas it has seized, saying Islamists would return if it left.

Among the targets shelled by Turkey is the Menagh airbase, which was seized by the YPG on Thursday from Syrian Islamist rebels. The YPG controls much of Syria's northern border with Turkey.
