Source: NBC
A pileup involving more than 50 cars shut down a highway outside Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, amid strong winds and poor visibility, officials said.
The accident Saturday morning closed all lanes on both sides of Interstate 78 in Lebanon County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.
State police told NBC News "over 50" vehicles were involved in the pileup, and said there were injuries, but did not say how many.
NBC affiliate WGAL reported the crash was fatal, but did not say how many victims there were. State police would not confirm any deaths to NBC News.

(31,392 posts)Seriously, these kinds of pile ups are scary and can happen so fast. Anybody out driving in snow/ice/fog/pouring rain needs to be very careful
and hope the next guy isn't texting or yakking on the phone while not paying attention to traffic!

(14,779 posts)This is I-78, it has one of those new fangled grass strip between the lanes, not a concrete wall which is the norm on most of the Turnpike. The Turnpike goes south of Harrisburg, I-78 goes North of Harrisburg. I-78 is NOT a toll road, it is maintained by Penndot not the Turnpike Commission.
Technically I-81 splits from the Turnpike at Carlisle , then I-78 splits from I-81 as I -81 goes by Harrisburg. I-81 then goes to Scranton and I-78 heads to New Jersey. Traffic from all three roads ends up on the Turnpike just before the Turnpike enters the Appalachian Mountains and no real split till Pittsburgh where I-70 splits off and heads for Whelling while I-76 heads for Cleveland. I-70 joins the Turnpike in Breezewood, half way through the mountains. Just a comment on the roads involved.
