Comcast hit with major TV outage
Source: CBS/AP
Comcast says it has mostly restored service after the cable provider experienced an outage Monday in many major cities across the U.S.
Spokeswoman Jenni Moyer says engineers continue to work on a temporary network interruption. She apologized for any inconvenience.
The tracking site Downdetector.com reports that the outage started around 6:30 a.m. Eastern time and affected much of the East Coast from Washington, D.C., to Boston. Other affected areas included Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Houston, Denver and San Francisco. Repairs were made by early afternoon.
Comcast, based in Philadelphia, says the outage primarily affected TV service. Customers lost some of their channels but kept some service. The cause of the outage and how many subscribers it affected were unknown.

Around midnight (eastern) I started to have connection problems. Within an hour or two I couldn't get onto anything, and started the process of trying to diagnose the home systerm. I reconnected, rebooted, reloaded everything, but no avail.
In fact, if you picked up the phone, you got a loud buzz. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have called 911 if I needed to, so there might be some pending lawsuits there.
Finally I got on my cell (since I couldn't get through my router), had to download and install the Comcast app, only to find they had "scheduled maintemance" from midnight to 5 a.m. (who schedulues maintentance that brings down your ability to call 911?).
So if this particular report started at 6:30 a.m., know that it followed a night of outages (in my area at least).
I would not want to be Director of IT there today.

(34,195 posts)I was at the doctor all morning, so I don't know if I had a problem.
But ~ I know Comcast is always at or near the bottom of customer satisfaction surveys done by Consumers Report magazine.
Unfortunately Comcast is the only cable company where I live,
and my landlord doesn't allow satellite dishes attached to the building.

Think about it. What does it cost you in 10 years?

(11,093 posts)I don't watch a lot of TV, but we also get phone and internet, and the way it's bundled, you can drop one, but you end up paying practically the same for all three.
I like TV sometimes, but I need my Internet and phone. The way it's bundled, it doesn't create any incentive to break it up, and where I live it's only one carrier (Comcast) unless I want to do somthing like DirecTV, but then I'm still stuck with resolving my need for high-speed Internet and a land-line.
I don't mind the occasional Internet outage (if I have advanced warning) but I certainly can't have the phone go out in this weather.

(65,168 posts). . .i was home sick yesterday and we didn't lose anything. I was on the couch watching TV nearly all day.
We're in the far south reaches of Chicagoland, so maybe Comcast areas farther north were affected.
