RUSSIA PRESSES AIR BLITZ IN SYRIA TO DICTATE PEACE TERMS
Source: Associated Press
MOSCOW (AP) -- Moscow joined the fight in Syria to return to relevance in international diplomacy. It has succeeded by anyone's measure - and Russia hopes to use its air power to dictate the terms of a cease-fire and prospective peace talks.
Russian warplanes have helped the Syrian army make broad advances and close in on the country's biggest city, Aleppo. Meanwhile, the Western-backed opposition is fractured and weakened.
So as talk turns to a cease-fire, Syrian President Bashar Assad, Moscow's sole ally in the region, is in a stronger position than he has been in years.
What's more, Russia has cast itself as an indispensable global player that holds the key to the settlement of a nearly five-year conflict that has flooded Europe with refugees. And the United States can't hope to push forward its agenda of ending the war without overtures to Russia.

(1,333 posts)and the sooner a war ends the sooner the suffering on all sides. Its just like a pulling a bandaid. you want to get it over with asap. Better game plan than the Americans who are predicting(more like wishing) the fight against ISIS to be a generational struggle.

(2,166 posts)It appeared to me the West was truly surprised when Russian Bear entered in
and started knocking heads, even over the US' stern objections and warnings.
They ordered the US military to stand down during initial sorties ... and the
US military did stand down -- wide eyed and dumb founded.
What to do now? Russia has built up forces in the area, consolidated
power with Syria, (and to a lesser extent Iran), seems to be giving shape to rudderless Iraq,
and has taken control. Absolute control. This will foil US plans
(to eliminate Assad, knock Iran out of the picture, and install ISIS as ruling body,
insuring continuous pointless war). This will foil Saudi plans to install Wahhabi-sm in Syria.
In fact, Sh-ia Iran is now in the picture more than ever. Israel is madder than a hornet's next over
Putin's recognition and inclusion of Palestine - gotta love that, icing on the cake.
Also, BRICS, newly minted competitor to the West's abominable IMF
International Monetary Fund, is discussing the rebuilding of Syria when all is said and done.
BRICS: Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa, with Iran as an unlisted partner.
The players that stand out are RUSSIA and CHINA.
They will thwart the evil IMF... and so a new game begins.
The US is losing grip, losing hegemony in the area and, eventually,
beyond. A monster never gives up power easily.
The US feels it must do something and fast... but what?
Russia is looking more and more like the new Number One.
Putin, the chess master, has entered in.

(35,356 posts)The West keeps saying that, and keeps getting proven wrong. There was a military solution in Georgia. Twice.
In Crimea.
In the Donbas.
In Syria.
Jaw-jaw is better than war-war, but if all you have is jaw-jaw then you're pretty much guaranteed to have war-war and experience that military solution that simply doesn't exist.
