Sanders a big hit at red-state University of South Carolina
Source: Dallas Morning News
COLUMBIA, S.C. Republicans can count on winning South Carolina in November. And the states flagship campus is likewise overwhelmingly Republican. But there are still plenty of Democrats, and while theyre badly outnumbered, boy were they thrilled to see Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
The self-proclaimed democratic socialist packed an auditorium at the University of South Carolina with hundreds of cheering students. The line stretched far out of the door of the student union building, and Sanders gave 10 minutes to over 100 students shut out of the main event by fire marshals and police.
Democracy is a big deal.
Democracy and I know I say this in South Carolina unlike football, football is a spectator sport. Democracy is not a spectator sport
Its your job to fight for your rights, the 74-year-old Sanders told the overflow crowd.
...
I want everybody here to know that the major recipient of welfare in America is the wealthiest family in America the Walton family, Sanders said, speaking in front of a banner that read A FUTURE TO BELIEVE IN. Lets get the wealthiest family in America, the Walton family, off of welfare. Lets have them pay their workers a living wage.

(13,326 posts)People thought he was insensitive to black issues, but I think it was just an impression based on where he was speaking.

(19,926 posts)I loved the sign. I cropped the pic of the two people who made it holding it so you can see the edges are not clean. Willy T had an OP a couple days ago with a pic of it where it looked like it was on an easel.
But please... use it and share away!!! I wish I had that sign for my big living room window!

(24,324 posts)But, he has hammered away at Wall Street and the 1%, etc., in order to wake people up to the huge issue that it is..
Because for so long he got the short end of the stick from the media, he HAD to keep repeating and repeating it. Recently, as word about the $$$$ issues has started to spread on its own, he is now freer to tackle other important issues.
Just my take.
I certainly hope he continues in that vain...

(23,156 posts)Republican in the fall, why is it being held up as proof Hillary is a better choice for nominee than Bernie? Even if she wins the SC primary by double digits, other than of course getting delegates, it won't really matter in the long run, will it?

(19,089 posts)It's part of the media narrative, in that each state is like another feather in the candidate's cap ... Bernie would LOVE to win SC just to throw a huge roadblock into Hills path .... But even if he loses SC - IF he wins Nevada (definitely possible), Hillary would have a possibly huge win in SC and a razor thin win in Iowa, while Bernie can claim a huge win in NH, it's doubtful that Bernie would win by much in Nevada ...
I think he takes Nevada by 5% and loses SC by 10% ...
GO Bernie !

He did the same thing in Las Vegas. There were several thousand who could not get into the high school gymnasium he was speaking in. I was inside and wondered why he was late showing up. We found out later, not from him, that he had stopped to speak to the people outside. He is a good man.
