A state of emergency has been declared in Fiji as tropical Cyclone Winston made landfall on the countrys main island, with estimated wind gusts of up to 195mph (315km/h).
The category five storm is thought to be the strongest ever recorded in the southern hemisphere, and is the strongest Fiji has ever experienced.
An elderly man from Nabasovi, Koro Island is reported to have died as a result of the storm. Fiji Disaster Management Committee (DISMAC) officer Vatia Vasuca told FBC news the man died after a roof top fell on him.
Save the Children Fijis CEO, Iris Low-McKenzie, said the storm had the potential to cause catastrophic damage across Fiji, an island nation frequented by hundreds of thousands of holiday-goers every year. Were extremely concerned about the impact this will have on children, who are particularly vulnerable during emergencies, she said.

(5,946 posts)when you put the rising seas with an island nature, they are so vulnerable.
So far one person died, but a lot of villages were completely destroyed and may not be in contact.

At least one person is dead and entire villages are feared destroyed after the worst tropical cyclone in Fijis history.
Fijians, tourists and aid workers have awakened to scenes of utter destruction after a category five cyclone battered the South Pacific nation with wind gusts as strong as 325km/h and waves up to 12m high.
The scale of the destruction is absolutely massive and its still far too early to tell just how many peoples homes and livelihoods have been devastated by this storm, Australian Red Cross aid worker Susan Slattery told AAP from Suva.
That will become much clearer over the next 24 hours and our first priority is to make sure people are safe and have the short-term assistance they need.

In a hundred years nobody is going to give a shit about Donald Trump, but global warming will be smacking everyone about. Everywhere will be Fiji or Syria or Ethiopia or any of the many places the impacts of global warming are already causing pain.
Our war against nature is a war this world economy will lose.

(101,355 posts)Rescue workers said that number could rise as some of the worst-hit outlying islands have yet to be reached.
Thousands are now in evacuation centres while many parts of the country remain without power.
Cyclone Winston, which hit over the weekend, brought winds of over 320km/h (200mph), torrential rain, and waves of up to 12m (40ft).
