Corruption-Ridden Texas City's New Woe: Undrinkable Water
Source: ABC
After weeks of turmoil and the arrests of all but one top city official, residents of Crystal City have a new problem: undrinkable water.
Black water came out of the pipes in homes in the tiny Texas city, where a sweeping bribery and conspiracy indictment has ensnared the recently resigned mayor and most other city leaders. Volunteers handed out donated bottles of water on Friday, as state environmental officials test the water for bacteria.
Joel Barajas the only city council member not facing criminal charges told the San Antonio Express-News ( http://bit.ly/1oB7udV ) that he was grateful to residents elsewhere in the region who donated water.
"There are caring people in Southwest Texas," said Barajas, who has been thrust into being the point person for all of the city's departments.
And to add even more to the town's woes, the Texas Education Agency said Friday that the local school district could lose its accreditation after failing to meet state standards for the third straight year.

(3,290 posts)than the corrupt officials. This stuff doesn't happen in a vacuum and the voters have the ultimate say in who runs their towns or cities. Whether it is apathy, voting for good old boys or voters being conned by slick campaigns it certainly does not speak well for Crystal City or any other town caught up in these messes.
It does seem like this kind of political malfeasance is becoming more and more prevalent. The officials responsible must be brought to trial and citizens need to demand that really stiff punishments handed out. Otherwise the corruption will just keep on repeating.

(42 posts)I wonder about Texas sometimes and then I think Meh, they brought this on themselves. That also goes for any state that just votes for the party line and not for the issues. Let them eat cake, but make sure they've been drug tested first!
So much for the party of "small gov-mint".

(3,765 posts)this part of Texas is one of the strongest reliably Democratic parts of the state. Considering that most of these officials are probably Democrats your statement doesn't really apply.

(42 posts)Post some facts then, or I stand by my statements! I am speaking of Texas in general, and I do believe its control by the repugs at this time, no?

(3,765 posts)aren't responsible for a mess. I just was responding to your characterizing the Crystal City mess as a problem with Republicans.
For that matter, I see your handle is keylargo. Florida isn't exactly reliably Democratic either.
Also, here is an article about the distribution of voters in Texas. What you will notice from this city is in the blue area that Barack Obama won in 2012. You might notice that Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Beaumont, El Paso and Dallas are also reliably Democratic.

Being from Texas, I kinda automatically knew that the area you were talking about is mostly Democrat country.

(42 posts)I just moved to Florida from Utah... Florida being a swing state was part of my reasoning, maybe one more hippie will make the difference this year and swing them to the blue again! Still, I can't abide the batshit crazies who run the state, maybe we can swing them too!

(7,525 posts)From what I read, Crystal City was doing renovation work on their water tower. They had to flush the water out, and a bunch of accumulated sediment from over the years came with it. What struck me as odd was the fact that they don't flush their water system on a regular basis. The city in which I live does it yearly. We are sent a letter which basically tell us that if we see any discolored water that we should let our tap run until the water is clear again.
