Protesters Disrupt Water Supplies to India's Capital

More than half the water supply to 18 million people in Indias capital is being disrupted after deadly unrest in a neighboring state.
Protesters in Haryana shut off a canal carrying water to New Delhi amid at least three days of unrest over caste rights that also forced the countrys top automaker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. to close some factories. As many as 5,000 security personnel have been deployed in the region to restore order.
"Delhi has to rely on this one canal for a substantial part of its water supply," Sanjam Cheema, a spokeswoman for the citys water utility, Delhi Jal Board, said late on Sunday. "We can do nothing to improve the situation."

Indias caste system is a method of social stratification, based largely on Hindu beliefs of purity. The governments reservation system guarantees a wide range of benefits -- such as school placement, access to state jobs and certain welfare programs -- to lower castes and indigenous tribes.
The Jats, who comprise nearly 30 percent of Haryanas population, are seeking to be included in a designation known as Other Backward Class.
