Texas private colleges are saying no to guns on campus

Source: Washington Post

AUSTIN, Texas — When Texas’ conservative Legislature passed a law requiring public universities to allow concealed guns on campus, it also gave the state’s private institutions of higher learning the chance to follow suit. None has so far.

More than 20 private schools have said they won’t lift their gun bans when the law takes effect this August, including the state’s largest private universities that have religious affiliations and often align with the type of conservative values espoused by the politicians behind the law.

The opposition has not surprised top Texas Republicans who championed the law as a matter of constitutional rights and self-defense. But it reflects a widespread belief even among conservative university leaders that guns have no place in the classroom.

receive even one penny of govt. money, then they have to abide by the state law, now public universities have no choice but to allow concealed carry on their campuses.

BTW, can you point out where CC has been a problem with the colleges that have allowed for CC for years?

no blood running in the classrooms, no grades changed because of threats, etc, so why would TX be any different?

It's about professors being able to teach what they know and
to express their views without fear of harm.

I can't imagine standing in front of a lecture room knowing that
some there have guns and me having to worry that something
I say might trigger a shooting ...

And the same would apply also if I were a student ... not feeling
safe ever and wondering if something I say or do might trigger
a shooting.

I am. I teach Latin American history at a major state university. I have a hard enough time teaching US foreign policy in Latin America in this current political climate without the fear that some student is carrying a gun. I do not need that additional stress. I don't get paid enough to be concerned that my students are carrying guns. If students are so worried about their personal safety and freedoms that they can't leave their dangerous little toys at home, then they do not need to be on a college campus with self-actualized human beings. Adding guns on campus to the mix of insecurities, nerves, anxieties that college students experience is monumental stupidity. There is a reason that university presidents and police leaders don't want guns on campus.

I'll quit my job the minute guns are allowed on my campus.

16. The irony is that there are more Democrats here than Republicans.

Gerrymandering of districts has made the Democratic vote useless. My Rep, Joe Barton district 6, has a district that contains 1/3 of Arlington and then goes south along Hwy 287 all the way down I-45 to Corsicana, a district that is ten miles wide and 100 miles long.

I haven't cast a vote that had any meaning in 30 years.

So yeah, it sucks.

Even in Texas the idea that guns make you safer is a fringe idea.

Concealed carry on campus is not about the students; they are not eligible due to the 21 age restriction.

Concealed carry on campus is about the staff and faculty.
