Nasa to release recordings of unexplained 'music' from the far side of the moon

Source: International Business Times

The dark side of the moon has always held a mystical fascination for stargazers – so when the crew of one of the first missions to orbit it heard strange music in their headsets, they were so surprised they weren't sure whether or not to report it. The sounds were heard by the three astronauts on the Apollo 10 launch in 1969 while they were out of the range of terrestrial radio broadcasts.

<snip>

Recordings of what happened were classified for 40 years, but they have recently been recovered, and the music is to be revealed on the Science Channel's series, Nasa's Unexplained Files.

The sounds lasted for the full hour of the crew crossed over the dark side. Mission transcripts reveal the three men talking about the noises and discussing what to do, but do not identify who was speaking.

One of the crew says: "You hear that? That whistling sound? Whooooooooo!"

"It sounds like, you know, outer space-type music," another replies.

Later, one says: "I tell you, that music is really weird."

"No one will believe us," replies a colleague.

Apollo 10 astronauts reported hearing odd 'music' on far side of moon

Published February 21, 2016 FoxNews.com

The astronauts who flew the dress rehearsal for the first lunar landing reported hearing mysterious “outer space-type music” while flying behind the moon in May 1969.

The case of the odd, unexplained whistling noise is uncovered during an upcoming episode of the Science Channel series, “NASA’s Unexplained Files.” The episode focuses on a strange event experienced by the crew members of Apollo 10, a mission which flew to the moon, entered lunar orbit and got within 5,000 feet of the moon’s surface in preparation for Apollo 11’s historic flight two months later.

The Apollo 10 astronauts – Tom Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan – can be heard on recordings from the flight talking about the strange sound, and whether to tell NASA about it.

“It sounds like, you know, outer space-type music,” one of the astronauts says.

“Shall we tell [NASA] about it?” an astronaut asks.

“I don’t know,” another replies. “We ought to think about it.”

Kreeg Antwoord: (coughing) You see, it all started on August 20th, 1977, when NASA put up a recording of the sounds of Earth on Voyager I. A two-hour long tape included, uh, natural sounds of animals, a French poem by Gaugliere, a passage from the Koran in Arabic, messages from President Carter, United Nations Secretary Kurt Waldheim, music -- everything from classical to Chuck Berry.

Maxine Universe: Uh -- and you're saying that the, uh -- another civilization has found the tape?

Cocuwa: Yes. They've sent us a message that actually proves it. It may be just four simple words, but it is the FIRST positive proof that other intelligent beings inhabit the universe.

Maxine Universe: Uh -- what are the four words, Cocuwa?

Cocuwa: The four words that came to us from outer space -- the FOUR words that will appear on the cover of Time Magazine next week -- are: (he holds up the magazine) "Send More Chuck Berry".

many 'moons' ago. They had altered it so it could be heard by our human ears.

The recorded sounds are the complex interactions of charged electromagnetic particles from the solar wind, ionisphere, and planetary magnetosphere.

I purchased them all because I was so curious. Especially since I
had always been told that there was no sound in space.
The noises were mainly like a chorus of whistles and bleeps, but sometimes
sounding like ethereal music which was beautiful.
At any rate, I'm curious if this article is referring to this same thing?

The moon is tidally locked to the Earth. That means that one face of the moon is always pointed towards Earth. It does NOT mean that one side of the Moon is always pointed towards the Sun. We can see the Moon go through phases every month (a word that itself derives from "moon&quot .

There is a far side of the Moon, the side that always points away from Earth. But the far side still has night and day, just like the rest of the Moon.

There is no fucking dark side!

Have you ever been able to year your car engine revving through the AM radio? The Apollo CSM was as complicated as a car--and the building the car was parked in. So we can expect that it made all sorts of hoots and whirrs across the electromagnetic spectrum. It might even echo slightly as the signals were bounced off the surface 50 miles below.

Several hundred degrees colder, if I recall.

I'm wondering if this is something as simple as gas seeping from a formerly hot area of the space craft to another as it cools down.

I was drinking a cool, refreshing sparkling water one day while I was working at home alone. After a while, I started hearing this weird, warbling theremin-like sound that came out of nowhere and seemed to be all around me. It turned out that a sunbeam from the window had hit my drink, warmed it up, and gas was now seeping out from the cap I had replaced on top. That's all it was.

From CBS The true story behind Apollo 10's "outer-spacey" music encounter:

Yes, the Apollo 10 crew heard strange noises over their radios while passing over the far side of the moon, beyond the reach of any earthly signals, and the astronauts were clearly startled, wondering where the sounds could be coming from and joking about whether they should mention it to flight controllers in Houston.

But as it turns out, there's a perfectly rational explanation that did not require the presence of aliens or ancient astronauts. The strange sounds were the result of radio interference between the VHF systems aboard the Apollo 10 lunar module and the command module.

From Popular Mechanics: What Was the Mysterious "Space Music" Astronauts Heard on the Dark Side of the Moon?. Actually, it's the far side; Pop Mechanics should know better.

Michael Collins heard something similar on Apollo 11:

"There is a strange noise in my headset now, an eerie woo-woo sound. Had I not been warned about it, it would have scared the hell out of me. Stafford's Apollo 10 crew had first heard it, during their practice rendezvous around the Moon. Alone on the back side, they were more than a little surprised to hear a noise that John Young in the Command Module and Stafford in the LM each denied making. They gingerly mentioned it in their debriefing sessions, but fortunately the radio technicians (rather than the UFO fans) had a ready explanation for it: it was interference between the LM's and Command Module's VHF radios. We heard it yesterday when we turned our VHF radios on after separating the two vehicles, and Neil said that it 'sounds like wind whipping around the trees.' It stopped as soon as the LM got on the ground, and started up again just a short time ago. A strange noise in a strange place."

Standing on the moon

Standing on the moon
I got no cobweb on my shoe
Standing on the moon
I'm feeling so alone and blue
I see the Gulf of Mexico
As tiny as a tear
The coast of California
Must be somewhere over here - over here

Standing on the moon
I see the battle rage below
Standing on the moon
I see the soldiers come and go
There's a metal flag beside me
Someone planted long ago
Old Glory standing stiffly
Crimson, white and indigo - indigo

I see all of Southeast Asia
I can see El Salvador
I hear the cries of children
And the other songs of war
It's like a mighty melody
That rings down from the sky
Standing here upon the moon
I watch it all roll by - all roll by

Standing on the moon
With nothing else to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you

Standing on the moon
I see a shadow on the sun
Standing on the moon
The stars go fading one by one
I hear a cry of victory
And another of defeat
a scrap of age-old lullaby
Down some forgotten street

Standing on the moon
Where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon
But I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco
On a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven
At this crescent in the sky

Standing on the moon
With nothing left to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you - be with you
