Spike Lee to Endorse Bernie Sanders, Voice Ad for the Senator
Source: ABC News

The battle for African-American celebrity backing and voters continues to be a major part of the Democratic nominating contest this week. And the Bernie Sanders campaign will start running radio ads today in South Carolina featuring another famous voice: Spike Lee.
Waaaaake up! Wake up, South Carolina! Lee begins in the new spot first obtained by ABC News from the Bernie Sanders campaign. This is your dude, Spike Lee. And you know that I know that you know that the system is rigged! And for too long weve given our votes to corporate puppets. Sold the okie doke. Ninety-nine percent of Americans were hurt by the Great Recession of 2008, and many are still recovering.
Thats why I am officially endorsing my brother, Bernie Sanders. Bernie takes no money from corporations. Nada. Which means hes not on the tape, and when Bernie gets into the White House, he will do the right thing! the actor, writer and film producer continues in the ad.
The line doubles as a reference to one of Lees best-known movies.

(2,975 posts)though I agree with what I think your initial appraisal is, even our folks are new sometimes.
If they're a shill, we'll see that in time.
Why?

(194 posts)Because if there were an avalanche of prominent black politicians and supporters coalescing around Bernie, then the endorsement would carry more weight, and have more of an effect. But unfortunately for Bernie, that hasn't happened yet. He is gaining some traction, but not nearly enough to change the dynamics of the black vote going overwhelmingly for Hillary. A perfect example of what I'm talking about is like what is starting to happen for establishment figures coalescing around Rubio as an alternative to Trump. Those endorsements are starting to matter more and more because it generates momentum, basically the "snowball effect"

(11,990 posts)The Spike Lee endorsement? Or this particular ad?
And if you say the endorsement (or "both" , is there anyone you can think of, who has not yet endorsed either candidate, who you think could really make a difference?

(51,122 posts)Morgan Freeman is backing Hillary Clinton for president, the actor told CNN's Don Lemon.
The Oscar winner also told Lemon that he doesn't have any trust issues with Clinton.
"Not with me, she doesn't," Freeman said in an interview that aired Friday on "CNN Tonight." "I can't say that she doesn't, because all you need in some cases for people is to say it. Just put it out there and it gets legs. The Clintons have been being beat down ever since way back, so she just was going along with that legacy that she's inherited over the amount of time she's been in politics, which is a long time."
Freeman added, "I think this is just made-up stuff, just, you know, it's political hogwash."

Actor Danny Glover introduced Bernie Sanders at a large rally in Greenville, South Carolina, Sunday night. Glover endorsed Sanders earlier this month, but this appearance onstage was his first side-by-side with the Vermont senator.
"What a moment, what a moment," Glover said as he took the stage. "You can feel the Bern, don't you feel it?"
Coming off a loss in the Nevada caucuses Saturday, the Sanders campaign staff is now bracing for back-to-back losses, as the the Vermont senator continues to lag behind Hillary Clinton in the polls in South Carolina, which holds the nation's next primary on Saturday. Their hope is to exceed expectations here, especially with the African American vote, which so far has largely and almost uniformly backed Clinton.
As such, Sanders spent the morning courting these coveted voters at a church in Columbia. He was accompanied there by former NAACP head Ben Jealous, who is also backing him. The campaign is clearly hoping these high profile African American personalities will help move the needle.
