(CNN)Kurdish forces have rescued a 16-year-old Swedish girl from ISIS in northern Iraq, according to regional Kurdish authorities.
Kurdish special forces came to the aid of the girl, named Marlin Stivani Nivarlain, near the ISIS-held city of Mosul on Wednesday, said a statement by the Kurdistan Region Security Council. The statement did not say how long ISIS had held the girl.
The teen is from Boras, about 405 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Stockholm, the Swedish capital. According to the statement from Kurdish authorities, Nivarlain "was misled by an ISIL member in Sweden to travel to Syria and later to Mosul." ISIL is another acronym for ISIS.
Members of her family, along with Swedish authorities, asked for Kurdish help in rescuing her, the statement said.

How the hell does someone like this decide to go join ISIS? Don't they watch/read the news ever? This kind of stuff just blows my mind.
The Kurds seem like decent people.

(65,483 posts)don't pay attention to the news, but spend their time on social media, where they are targeted by recruiters who appeal to their idealism and religious feelings, and also woo them, making them feel special and wanted. Perhaps there is also a bit of teenager rebellion against strict parents--you know, running off with an exciting "boyfriend" their parents wouldn't approve of, especially if their parents are strict and don't allow them to date.
In the US, teenaged girls are often targeted by sexual predators and persuaded to run away from home to hook up with the guys. Just as we are amazed that these Muslim girls are unaware of what ISIS actually is and what they have planned for their female recruits, we should be equally amazed at US girls who are so completely oblivious to the typical outcome for girls who are targeted by sexual predators online.
In both cases, the girls are made to feel important and desired, and they are promised attention, adventure, and a chance to act out against their parents.

(5,522 posts)Only after losing their manhood to a sharp instrument should they be hanged. Normally I hate violence, but I hope all ISIS members have that moment when, after begging for mercy, they know they're about to be shown the same treatment that they show others.
