Ben Shapiro escorted by police from CSULA due to angry protesters
Source: KABC
A controversial conservative commentator was escorted by police from California State University, Los Angeles as angry demonstrators protested his presence on campus Thursday afternoon.
Ben Shapiro, editor-in-chief of the Daily Wire and editor-at-large of Breitbart News, was scheduled to speak at the campus on Thursday.
But earlier in the week, CSULA President William Covino canceled the event, stating he wanted to postpone the speech so that speakers with different viewpoints could also talk and allow "the free exchange of ideas."
Shapiro took to Twitter to express his anger, and tweeted Wednesday afternoon that he intended to still show up to the campus to give his lecture.

(2,707 posts)anyone who disagrees. Sooner or later, the general left will face a backlash because of the far-left on campuses (re Yale and no more "house master" even tho that had nothing to do with race)

(18,652 posts)He faced criticism b/c Shapiro was appearing without an opposing viewpoint also being presented. Students want and deserve all sides to be heard, not just the RWnut's viewpt.

(22,890 posts)Should Jewish Germans have defended Hitler's right to blame Jews for all the country's ills? Shapiro insists the Black Lives Matter movement doesn't care about black lives and is a threat to young African American men, when it is a powerful reaction to a society that has ignored police brutality against African Americans for far too long. I think the university is right to decide that a speaker as radical as this one should be balanced by the inclusion of other speakers in the program. Make it a debate or a panel discussion.

(1,054 posts)*EVERYBODY* should be heard. NO ONE should ever be censored or shouted down. If you don't want to hear someone, don't listen or go to the event. Protest outside with information and maybe shame attendees, but I think any of any persuasion for any reason anywhere who tries to prevent someone from speaking is more of a vile turd than any racist wanker like the moron subject of the post.
I see it as an absolute. there is no right to censor, to interrupt to prevent any information from reaching anyone who wants to examine it. *MAYBE* the exception of a direct and literal call to violence or the divulging of things that should genuinely be classified, other than that, nope. No one should be shouted down, interrupted or censored, period and the people doing are more of a threat to America than some asshole like Rush or Coulter.

These un-American right wing pos do all they can to censor. They attempt to stop liberal radio and like to push for burning books or Music CDs.
Republicans have always been for censorship.

The old saying applies, I may not like what you have to say, but I'll defend your right to say it.

(685 posts)Of the constitutionally protected right to free speech is when you have to extend it to those whose words you abhor. Your right, my right to voice our beliefs - all part of our somewhat flawed yet perfect union.
I'll gladly have my tax dollars support any school allowing all voices...even the voices expressing sentiments I passionately oppose. The alternative is un-American and contrary to our most cherished First Amendment.
And here's me exercising my first amendment rights: Ben Shapiro really sucks.
