Swiss voters reject nationalist plan to expel foreigners for minor crimes

Source: Associated Press

Swiss voters have rejected a proposal by a nationalist party to automatically expel foreigners who commit even low-level crimes, Swiss public broadcaster SRF reported hours after polls closed at noon on Sunday.

SRF cited political research group gfs.bern, which projected the measure would be rejected by 59% of voters based on partial results from some polling areas.

The outcome comes as a blow to the Swiss People’s party that had campaigned for the plan, and a turnaround from opinion polls last year which had predicted it would be accepted.

Under its proposal, the law would have been changed to make expulsion part of the sentence for any foreigner, whether for severe crimes like murder or low-level crimes such as threatening officials or giving false testimony – if they are committed twice within a 10-year span.

I'm sorry, but I don't have a problem with people being deported for the example of "low level" Chakab Feb 2016 #1
From another report, deportable "crimes" would have included speeding and arguing with police. Eugene Feb 2016 #2
Okay, that makes much more sense. (Or less sense for a legal standpoint.) Chakab Feb 2016 #3
Surprising. Switzerland is not exactly the most open minded European country. nt onehandle Feb 2016 #4

crimes that were listed.

Maybe this is another example of how much further to the right a lot of people on the American left are on the political spectrums other countries.

all day to see the results. Funny enough, the southern cantons of the country were the most racists but the areas we live in shut it down well.

You know, you can only import 1 kilo of meat (per person) into Switzerland and we got stopped by customs officers a couple of weeks ago. We had 2.3 kilos of meat that we bought in Germany and the police scolded us and told us that they wouldn't write us a ticket this time (50 francs+ tax) but to know the rules or else. We've lived here over a year and this was our first stop. This vote was to force deportation of minor violations like this, so if we had been written a ticket and fined, our next offense could allow them to deport us. Or a speeding ticket. We're relieved because meat? Not weapons, not drugs, food. I'm very grateful that the Swiss voted this down.

conversion rate: francs to dollars (right now about 1:1)
edit; clarity
